Tamil Reading: After Many Years

பல வருஷங்களுக்குப் பிறகு
Lesson 6 from the University of Michigan Intermediate Tamil Book.
1.  நான் இப்பொழுது ஒரு பெரிய பேராசிரியர்.
I am now a professor.
2.  டாக்டர் பட்டம் பெற்றவன்.
Doctor Pattam Petravan.
3.  பல நூல்களை இயற்றியவன்.
Creator of many books.
4.  வெளிநாடுகளுக்குப் போய் வந்தவன்.
I traveled to foreign countries. (Verb is literally: go and come back).
5.  பலர் போற்றவழ்கிரவன்.
Many people live in peace/protection.  (something seems wrong with this sentence)
6.  ஓரளவுக்கு பொருளாதார வசதி உள்ளவன்.
To a certain extent I have the comfort/residence as an affluent person.
7.  எனக்கு சில சமுதாய அமைப்பு களோடு நெருங்கிய தொடர்பு உள்ளது.
??? I have a few collections. ???
8.  சமுதாயச் சேவை எனக்குப் பிடித்த ஒன்று.
I like social service.
9.  என் குடும்பம் இப்பொழுது நல்ல நிலையில் இருக்கிறது.
My family now is in good standing/status.
10. என் மனைவி ஒரு பொறியாளர்.
My wife is an engineer.
11. மகன் மருத்துவராக பணி செய்கிறான்.
Son has an occupation in medicine.
12. மகள் கல்லூரியில் பேராசிரியர்.
Daughter is a college professor.
13. மருமகள் அரசாங்க அதிகாரி.
Daughter-in-law is a government official.
14. மருமகன் ஒரு வக்கீல்.
Son-in-law is a lawyer.
15. எல்லோரும் சென்னை நகரில் வாழ்கிறோம்.
We all live in Chennai town.
16. போன வாரம் நாண்பர் ஆறுமுகம் என்னைத் கேடி, வீட்டுக்கு வந்தார்.
Last week, my friend Arumugam found my house and came.
17. அவர் எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் இருக்கிரபல்லியில் ஆசிரியர்.
He is the school teacher in my village.
18. நான் அந்தச் சிறிய பள்ளியில் தான் முதலில் படித்தேன்.
I first studied at that small school.
19. பிறகு சென்னைக்கு வந்தேன்.
After I came to Chennai.
20. அந்தப் பள்ளியில் ஆசிரியர் தினவிழாவுக்கு என்னை அழைத்தார்.
He invited me to the teacher day festival in that school.
21. அவருடைய அழைப்பை நான் உடனே ஏற்றுக்கொண்டேன்.
I at once accepted his invitation.
22. என் நண்பருக்கு மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சி.
My friend was very pleased.
23. எனக்கு மிகவுச்சியே.
I was pleased too./It was a joy to me.
24. காரணம், பல வருஷங்களுக்குப் பிறகு, என் பிறந்த ஊருக்கு போய்வர ஒரு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு, இல்லையா?
Reason, after many months, it is a good opportunity to go and come back to hometown, is it not?
25. 'பெற்றதாயும் பிறந்த பொன்னாடும்' என்பார்களே, அதுபோல.

'Nothing can excel homeland and motherland' they will say like that.

Tamil Reading: Our Uncle Comes

எங்கள் மாமா வருகிறார்/enga maamaa varRaaru
எங்கள் மாமா வருகிறார் is Lesson 4 from the Intermediate Coursebook pdf provided by the University of Michigan's Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition.  This reading comes with two "versions" one in the written style, one in the spoken style. In the original pdf, the spoken style is still written using the Tamil orthography. Blogger automatically corrects the "incorrect" spellings of spoken Tamil, so I will write the spoken portions in italicized Roman characters when I get around to that part.

1.  எங்கள் மாமா இன்று ஊரிலிருந்து இங்கே வருகிறார்.
 enga maamaa innekki uurulerunthu.
My uncle comes here today from the village.
2.  அவருடைய ஊர் மதுரை.
His village is Madurai.
3.  அவருடைய பெயர் நாயகன்.
His name is Nayagan.
4.  அவர் முதல் தடவையாக இப்பொழுது சென்னைக்கு வருகிறார்.
He comes to Chennai for the first time.
5.  இதுக்கு மண்ணால் வந்தது இல்லை.
Hadn't come to it before.
6.  மாமா எங்களோடு ஒரு மாதம் தங்கி இருப்பார்.
Uncle will be staying with me one month.
7.  அவர் இன்று ரயிலில் வருகிறார்.
Today he comes by train.
8.  அந்த ரயில் மதுரையில் காலை ஆறு மணிக்குப் புறப்படுகிறது.
That train starts in Madurai at 6 in the morning.
9.  சென்னைக்கு இரவு ஏழு மணிக்கு வருகிறது.
The train comes to Chennai at 7 at night.
10.  மாமாவைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வர நான் எழும்பூர் ரயில் நிலையம் போகிறேன்.
I am going to the "Egmore" railway station to bring uncle with me.
11.  எங்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து சரியாக ஆறு மணிக்குக் கிளம்ப வேண்டும்.
We want to start from our house at exactly 6.
12.  என்னோடு மகள் மாதவியும் வருகிறாள்.
My daughter Maathavi comes too.
13.  மாதவி இப்பொழுது பள்ளியில் ஐந்தாவது படிக்கிறாள்.
 Maathavi now studies 5th grade (?) in school.
14.  அவள் மாமாவை இதுவரை பார்த்தது இல்லை.
She has not seen uncle before [lit: till now].
15.  மாமா பெரிய பணக்காரர்.
Uncle is a very [literally: big] rich man.
16.  அவர் மிக நல்லவர்.
 He is a very good person.
17.  எல்லோருக்கும் தேவையான் உதவி செய்கிறார்.
To all of us he does necessary help.
18.  அவருக்கு குழந்தைகள் இல்லை.
He has no children. [Lit: To him, no children.]
19.  அவர் நல்ல பக்தர்.
He is a good devotee.
20.  சென்னையிலிருந்து இப்படியே திருப்பதி போவார்.
From Chennai in this way he will go to Thiruppathi.
21.  திருப்பதி கோவில் மிகவும் பெரியது.
The Thiruppathi temple is a very big one.
22. அது மலைமேல் இருக்கிறது.
It is on that hill.
23.  நாங்களும் அவரோடு திருப்பதி போக வேண்டும்.
We also want to go to Thiruppathi with him.

Tamil Reading: குமரனும் அவருடைய குடும்பமும்
(Kumaran and his family) This Reading is from Lesson 3 from the Intermediate Coursebook pdf provided by the University of Michigan's Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition.The story is retyped twice below. First in its original form, then with sentence by sentence translation.

 குமரனும் அவருடைய குடும்பமும்
     குமரன் ஒரு பள்ளி ஆசிரியர்.  அவருடைய மனைவி செல்வி.  அவள் ஒரு ஆசிரியை.  இரண்டுபேரும் ஒரே பள்ளியில் வேலை செய்கிறார்கள்.  அவர்களுடைய குடும்பம் சிறியது.  அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மகன், ஒரு மகன் மட்டுமே.  மகனுடைய பெயர் செல்வன், மகளுடைய பெர்யர்.   நல்ல குடும்பம்; அளவான குடும்பம்.


    தினமும் காலையில் ஆறு மணிக்கு எழுந்து வேலைகளைத் தொடங்குவார்கள். எல்லோரும் எட்டு மணிக்குப் பள்ளிக்குப் போவர்கள்.  மத்தியானம் பள்ளியில் சாப்பிடுவார்கள்.  மாலை நான்கு மணிக்கு வீட்டக்குத் திரும்புவார்கள்.  குழந்தைகளை வெளியே போய் விளையாட அனுமதிப்பார்கள். செல்வனும் அல்லியும் மற்றபிள்ளைகளோடு  வெளியே  போய் விளையாடுவார்கள். ஆனால் ஆறு மணிக்கு வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிவிடுவார்கள்.


    இரவு எட்டு மணிக்கு வீட்டில் அப்பா, அம்மா, மகன், மகள் எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து உணவு சாப்பிடுவார்கள்.   சிறிது நேரம் படிப்பார்கள்.  குழந்தைகள் இருவரும் ஒன்பது தூங்கப் போவர்கள்.  ஆனால் குமரனும் செல்லியும் இரவு பத்தரை மணிக்குத்தான் தூங்கப் போவர்கள்.


   செல்வி அதிகாலை ஐந்து மணிக்கு எழுவாள்.  உடனே தேவையான சாப்பாட்டு செய்து முடிப்பாள். பிறகு அவர்களுடைய அன்றாட வேலைகளைத் தொடங்குவார்கள்.


   இப்படி அவர்களுடைய எளிமையான வாழ்க்கை நடக்கிறது. அமைதியான வாழ்க்கை அவர்களுடையது.


Sentence by sentence:

1.  குமரன் ஒரு பள்ளி ஆசிரியர். Kumaran is a school teacher.
2.  அவருடைய மனைவி செல்வி. His wife is Selvi.
3.  அவள் ஒரு ஆசிரியை. She is a teacher.
4.  இரண்டுபேரும் ஒரே பள்ளியில் வேலை செய்கிறார்கள். Both are working in a school. (Why is ore used instead of oru?)
5.  அவர்களுடைய குடும்பம் சிறியது. Their family is small.
6.  அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மகன், ஒரு மகன் மட்டுமே. They only have a son and a daughter. (Lit: To them, a son, a daughter, this only.)
7.  மகனுடைய பெயர் செல்வன், மகளுடைய பெயர் அள்ளி. Son's name is Selvan, daughter's name is Alli.
8.  நல்ல குடும்பம்; அளவான குடும்பம். Good family, limited (small) family.
9.  தினமும் காலையில் ஆறு மணிக்கு எழுந்து வேலைகளைத் தொடங்குவார்கள். Every day at 6 in the morning they start getting up.
10. எல்லோரும் எட்டு மணிக்குப் பள்ளிக்குப் போவர்கள். They all go to school at 8:00.
11.  மத்தியானம் பள்ளியில் சாப்பிடுவார்கள். Midday they eat at school.
12.  மாலை நான்கு மணிக்கு வீட்டக்குத் திரும்புவார்கள். At four in the evening, they return home.
13.  குழந்தைகளை வெளியே போய் விளையாட அனுமதிப்பார்கள்.
14. செல்வனும் அல்லியும் மற்றபிள்ளைகளோடு  வெளியே  போய் விளையாடுவார்கள். Selvan and Alli
15. ஆனால் ஆறு மணிக்கு வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பிவிடுவார்கள். But at 6, they return (different conjugation) to the house.
16.  இரவு எட்டு மணிக்கு வீட்டில் அப்பா, அம்மா, மகன், மகள் எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து உணவு சாப்பிடுவார்கள்.At 8 at night in the house, father, mother, son, daughter,  all
17.  சிறிது நேரம் படிப்பார்கள்.
18.  குழந்தைகள் இருவரும் ஒன்பது தூங்கப் போவர்கள்.
19.  ஆனால் குமரனும் செல்லியும் இரவு பத்தரை மணிக்குத்தான் தூங்கப் போவர்கள்.
20.  செல்வி அதிகாலை ஐந்து மணிக்கு எழுவாள்.
21.  உடனே தேவையான சாப்பாட்டு செய்து முடிப்பாள்.
22.  பிறகு அவர்களுடைய அன்றாட வேலைகளைத் தொடங்குவார்கள்.
23.  இப்படி அவர்களுடைய எளிமையான வாழ்க்கை நடக்கிறது.
24. அமைதியான வாழ்க்கை அவர்களுடையது.

    ராம் என்னுடைய நெருங்கிய நண்பன். நூனும் அவனும் ஒன்றாகப் படிக்கிறோம். அவனுடைய அப்பா பெரிய மருத்துவர். சேலத்தில் பணி செய்கிறார். ஒரு பெரிய மருத்துவமனை நடத்துகிறார். அவருடைய பெரிய மகாலிங்கம். அவர் ஒரு அறுவை சிகிச்சை நிபுணர். அவர் லண்டனில் படித்தவர். முருகன் ராமுடைய அண்ணன். முருகன் கல்லூரியில் வேலை செய்கிறார். அவர் ஒரு பேராசிரியர். கமலா அவனுடைய தங்கை. அவர் மிக நன்றாகப் பாடுவாள், நடனமும் ஆடுவாள்.


    என் பெயர் கண்ணன். என்னுடைய அப்பா ஒரு மில் முதலாளி. அம்மா ஒரு பேராசிரியை. மணி என்னுடைய அண்ணன். அவர் ஒரு வியாபாரி. அவர் பஞ்சு வியாபாரம் செய்கிறார்.


    இன்று சனிக்கிழமை. நான் அண்ணனோடு வெளியே போகிறேன். நாங்கள் முதலில் கோளிலுக்குப் போகிறோம். பிறகு இருவரும் சினமா பார்க்கப் போகிறோம். சினமா முடிந்ததும், ஹோட்டலில் சாப்பிடுவோம். பிறகு, அண்ணனுடைய காரில் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்புவோம்.


    அண்ணன் எனக்குச் சில புத்தகங்களைப் போன வாரம் வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தார். நான் அந்தப் புத்தகங்களை நாளை படிக்க வேண்டும். படிப்பது எனக்கு மிகவும் படிக்கும்.

Sentence by sentence breakdown:
1. ராம் என்னுடைய நெருங்கிய நண்பன். Ram is my close friend. 2. நூனும் அவனும் ஒன்றாகப் படிக்கிறோம். He and I study together.
3. அவனுடைய அப்பா பெரிய மருத்துவர். His father is a big doctor.
4. சேலத்தில் பணி செய்கிறார். He is working in Salem. (lit: He does work in Salem)
5. ஒரு பெரிய மருத்துவமனை நடத்துகிறார். He manages a big hospital. (நடத்து= conduct, manage)
6. அவருடைய பெரிய மகாலிங்கம். His name is Maagaalingam.
7. அவர் ஒரு அறுவை சிகிச்சை நிபுணர். He is a surgeon (Lit: an expert in operations)
8. அவர் லண்டனில் படித்தவர். He is the one who studied in London.
9. முருகன் ராமுடைய அண்ணன்.  Murugan is Ram's older brother.
10. முருகன் கல்லூரியில் வேலை செய்கிறார். Murugan works in college.
11. அவர் ஒரு பேராசிரியர். He is a professor.
12. கமலா அவனுடைய தங்கை. Kamalaa is his younger sister.
13. அவள் மிக நன்றாகப் பாடுவாள், நடனமும் ஆடுவாள். She is a very good singer, good dancer also.
14. என் பெயர் கண்ணன். My name is Kannan.
15. என்னுடைய அப்பா ஒரு மில் முதலாளி. My father is a great owner.
16. அம்மா ஒரு பேராசிரியை. Mother is a professor.
17. மணி என்னுடைய அண்ணன். Mani is my older brother.
18. அவர் ஒரு வியாபாரி. He is a salesman.
19. அவர் பஞ்சு வியாபாரம் செய்கிறார். He sells cotton.
20. இன்று சனிக்கிழமை. Today is Saturday.
21. நான் அண்ணனோடு வெளியே போகிறேன். I along with older brother go outside.
22. நாங்கள் முதலில் கோளிலுக்குப் போகிறோம்.  We first go to the temple.
23. பிறகு இருவரும் சினமா பார்க்கப் போகிறோம். Then, both of us go to watch the cinema.
24. சினமா முடிந்ததும், ஹோட்டலில் சாப்பிடுவோம். As soon as the cinema is over we will eat in the hotel.
25. பிறகு, அண்ணனுடைய காரில் வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்புவோம். Then, in older brother's car we will get back home.
26. அண்ணன் எனக்குச் சில புத்தகங்களைப் போன வாரம் வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தார். Older brother game me a few books he bought last week. (lit: Older brother bought a few books last week and gave to me.)
27. நான் அந்தப் புத்தகங்களை நாளை படிக்க வேண்டும். I want to read those books tomorrow.
28. படிப்பது எனக்கு மிகவும் படிக்கும். I like reading very much.

This lesson uses some present tense, possessive and dative noun cases.
நடப்பது -- ஓடுவது நல்லது

மாறனும் கண்ணனும் நல்ல நண்பர்கள்.இருவரும் பள்ளி மாணவர்கள். தினமும் அதிகாலை எழுந்து, நடப்பது -- ஓடுவது அவர்களுடைய வழாக்கம். உடல் நலத்துக்கு  உடர்பயிசி தேவை.  அதனால் சிறிய வயது முதல் குசந்தைகளுக்கு உடற்பயிற்சி அவசியம் தேவை.

மாறன் மிக வேகமாக ஓடுவான். கண்ணனால் அவ்வளவு வேகமாக ஓட முடியாது. மாணவர்கள் -- இளைஞர்கள் தினமும் விளையாட வேண்டும். விளையாட்டு உடல் வளத்தையும் மன வளத்தையும் கொடுக்கிறது. அதனால்தான் கல்லி நிலையங்களில் விளையாட்டுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கிறார்கள்.

மாறன் கால்பந்து விளையாட்டில் வீரன். அதேபோல கண்ணன் கூடைப்பந்து நன்றாக விளையாட்டுவான். இருவரும் வருஷந்தோறும் விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகளில் பங்கேற்று, பல பரிசுகளைப் பெறுவது உண்டு. இதனால் அவர்கள் உடல்நலத்தோடு இருக்கிறார்கள். நல்ல மனநலத்தோடு படிக்கிறார்கள். நல்ல பிள்ளைகள்.

Another Tamil Textbook (Intermediate level)

I have lofty goals to be finished with the beginner's Lessons 1-25 on the Duke page by the end of February, which means I will be looking into using books at an Intermediate level.


This page from the University of Michigan (which also happens to publish a number of Tamil resources) has an Intermediate level textbook; it essentially looks like a reader.

It has stories written in both the spoken and written variations of the language. The website also has mp3 files which correspond to each chapter!
