Past Tense rules for Class 1 and 2 verbs

Class 1............................root +த் + regular pronoun endings
Class 1 (ending with ல்)...ல் changes to ன்ற் + regular pronoun endings
Class 1 (ending with ள்)...ள் changes to  ண்ட் + regular pronoun endings
Class ௨..........................root + ந்த் + regular pronoun endings

Exercises:
1. Conjugate based on given verbs, nouns/pronouns. I have written the literal translation in the brackets.
a. மழை பெய்தது. [Rain rained]
b. நாய் வளர்ந்தது. [Dog grew]
c. அவர் விழுந்தார். [He/she pol fell]
d. நீ சென்றாய். [You went]
e. நான் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். [I learned]

2. Translate the sentences.
a. It rained last week.  போன வாரம் மழை பெய்தது.
b. I killed the flies. நான் ஈகளை கொன்றேன்.
c. They won the competition. அவர்கள் போட்டிக்கு(?) வென்றார்கள்.
d. We sat outside. நான்கள் வெள்ளியே உட்கார்ந்தோம்.
e. He threw the ball up suddenly. அவன் பந்தை மேலே எறிதான்.
f. That girl fell down. அந்த பெண் கீழே விழுந்தாள்.
g. We did a lot of work.  நாம் மிகவும் வேலையை செய்தோம்.
h. The king ruled the country. அரசன் நாடை (use direct obj of nadu?) ஆண்டான்.
i. A girl cried yesterday. ஒரு பெண் நேற்று அழுதாள்.

Direct Object cont (Duke pdf)

Additional Tamil Direct Object Rules from Lesson 8 of the"Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf.
அ, இ, உ, எ, ஒ are short vowels. When a single syllable word contains a short vowel, to form the direct object we double the consonant and add ஐ.

Here are the exercises:
Change noun to direct object:
a. தூண் ... தூண்ணை (column/pillar)
b. பெண் ... பெண்ணை (girl)
c. ஆண் ... ஆண்ணை (boy/male)
d. கடிதம் ... கடிதத்தை (letter)
e. காலை ... காலையை   (morning)
f. தமிழீழம் ... தமிழீழத்தை
g. முள் ... முள்ளை (thorn)
h. கோபம் ... கோபத்தை (anger)
i. நிலம் ... நிலத்தை (land)
j. தண்ணீர் ... தண்ணரை (water)
k.மழை ... மழையை (rain)
l. வாய் ... வாய்யை (mouth)
m. வண்டி ... வண்டியை (cart)
n. பாம்பு ...பாமபை (snake)

Translation:
a. She writes the letter.
அவள் கடிதத்தை எழுதுகிறாள்.
b. We drink water.
நங்கள் தண்ணீரை குடிக்கிறோம்.
c. They plow the land.
அவர்கள் நிலத்தை உழுகிறார்கள்.
d. I open an eye.
நான் ஒரு கண்ணை திறக்கிறேன்.
e. The cart goes.
வண்டி போகிறது.
f. The king says it.
கோ அதை சொல்கிறான்.
g. Father throws this rock.
அப்பா இந்த கல்லை எறிகிறான்.
h. He sees the girl/ looks at the girl.
அவன் பெண்ணை காண்கிறன். *this is class 5, how do I conjugate it?

Direct Objects of nouns ending in டு and று

For forming direct objects in Tamil, if the noun ends in டு/று and the letter before is not a dotted consonant, டு/று changes to ட்டு/ற்று before adding the ஐ.

g. தமிழ் நாடு -->தமிழ் நாட்டை
h. பாட்டு --> பாட்டை
i. வண்டு --> வண்டை
j. கரண்டி -->கரண்டை
k. அக்கா -->அக்காவை
l. துண்டு --> துண்டை
m.ஆடு  --> ஆட்டை

Translate:
a. He chases the cat. அவன் பூனைவைத் துரத்துகிறான்.
b. We build that house. நாம் அந்த வீட்டைக் கடடுகிறோம்.
c. She holds the spoon. அவள் கரண்டியை பிடிக்கிறாள்.
d. They cross the river. அவர்கள் ஆற்றை கடக்கிறார்கள்.
e. I touch the cow.  நான் மாட்டை தொடுகிறேன்.
f. The dog chews the rope.  நாய் கயிற்றை மேல்கிறது .
g. You (all) throw the box. நீங்கள் பெட்டியை எறிகிறீர்கள்.

Exercise 1,  convert nouns in Tamil into their direct object/accusative case form

comb சிப்பு ---> சிப்பை
father அப்பா  --->அப்பாவை
hand கை  ---> கையை
knife கத்தி  ---> கத்தியை
ear காது  --->காதை
fly ஈ  ---> ஈயை
moon நிலா  ---> நிலைவை
work வேலை  ---> வேலையை

Exercise 2 Translate the English into Tamil
a. The fly sees you.
 ஈ உன்னைப் பார்க்கிறது.
b. I see the fly.
 நான் ஈயைப் பார்கிறேன்.
c. He opens the box.
அவன் பெட்டியை திறக்கிறான்.
d. Open this door!
இந்த கடவை திற!
e. We eat the food.
 நாங்கள் உணவை உண்கிறோம். (class 5 verb, is it conjugated correctly?)
f. She buys that shirt
அவள் இந்த சட்டையை  வாங்குகிறாள்.
g. You touch father.
 நீ அப்பாவை தொடுகிறாய்.
h. I throw the flower outside.
நான் பூவை வெளியே எரிகிறேன்.
i. It touches the moon.
இது நிலாவை தொடுகிறது.
j. You do this work!
நீ இந்த வேலையை செய்!

Noun Cases in Tamil: வேற்றுமை  
In Tamil, noun cases are added to the end of a noun to indicate what in English often is a preposition "in" "on" "with" etc. General information links are provided immediately below, followed by more specific links to posts related to each Noun Case. Updated as more posts are written.

 The Tamil names for the cases are essentially "first case" "second case" etc. Not very descriptive! And it seems like different books have the cases in different orders, so don't memorize "second case" etc. just yet!
Nominative case - முதல்வேற்றுமை/ எழுவாய்வேற்றுமை - use the regular noun
Objective/Accusative case/Direct Object  - இரண்டாம் வேற்றுமை  - ஐ ending.  The exact rules depend on the ending vowel of the noun.
