Tamil Language Online Reading 2

Reading 2 from The Tamil Language Online. This is still working on simple sentences which do not require a verb.  Again, written and spoken Tamil versions are provided and they include audio recordings on their site of each reading. This is the last activity from Unit One.

நான் ரொம்பச் சுட்டி! நீங்களும் ரொம்பச் சுட்டியா?

இவர் என் தாத்தா. தாத்தா உங்கள் பெயர் என்ன? என் பெயர் சுந்தரம். என் தாத்தா ரொம்ப நல்ல தாத்தா. இவர்கள் என் பாட்டி. பாட்டி உங்கள் பெயர் என்ன? என் பெயர் மாலா. என் பாட்டி ரொம்ப நல்ல பாட்டி. இது என் அம்மா. அம்மா பெயர் ராணி. இவர்கள்தான் இங்கே ராணி. இது என் அப்பா. அப்பா உங்கள் பெயர் என்ன? என் பெயர் குமார். அப்பா இங்கே ராஜா. அப்பாவும் அம்மாவும் ரொம்பக் கண்டிப்பு. இவன்தான் என்னுடைய தம்பி. இவன் பெயர் மூர்த்தி. மூர்த்தியும் நானும் குட்டிப் பையன்கள். மூர்த்தி ரொம்ப சுட்டிப் பையன். இவர்கள் என் அக்கா. அக்கா பெயர் மாலதி.

More simple sentences, plus some adjective work

These sentences and phrases come from the Intermediate Textbook made available by the Tamil Virtual University.
This is from Section 3 of Unit 1. Unit 1 spans 20 pages, some are sample sentences, others are  worksheets. I won't recreate everything here, but instead focus on translations and vocabulary.

Section 3
I have color coded each Tamil/English sentence pair since the sentence word order differs.  This also shows you how certain English words are unnecessary or implied in Tamil.

இது சிங்கம், சிங்கம் விளங்குகளில் வலியது.
This is a lion, the lion is strong among the animals.

இது யானை, யானை விலங்குகளில் பெரியது.
This is an elephant, the elephant is big among the animals.

அது மான், மான் சாதுவான விலங்கு.
That is a deer, the deer is a gentle animal.

இது கங்காரு, இது ஒரு ஆஸ்திரேலியா விளங்கு, இது இந்தியக் காடுகளில் இல்லை.
This is a kangaroo, it is an Australian animal, it is not native in the forest in India. (native is my best guess for காடுகளில்)

அது தான் சிட்டுக்குருவி, சிட்டுக்குருவி புறவைகளில்  சிறியது.
That is indeed a sparrow, the sparrow is small among birds.

இது மயில், மயில் ஆழகானது, இது இந்திய தேசியப்பறவை.
This is a peacock, the peacock is beautiful, it is India's national bird.

நீங்கள் மதுரையா? சிதம்பரமா?

மதுரை எங்கள் ஊர். இது பெரிய ஊர். மதுரை அம்மன் கோவில் ஒரு பெரிய கோவில். இந்த அம்மன் பெயர் மீனாக்ஷி. நீங்கள் மதுரையா சிதம்பரமா? சிதம்பரமும் ஒரு அழகான ஊர். சிதம்பரம் சிவன் கோவில் ஒரு அழகான கோவில். இந்தச் சிவன் பெயர் நடராஜர்.

நடராஜர் வீடு எங்கள் உள்ளம். அவருடைய ஆட்டம் எங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சி. உங்கள் உள்ளம் யார் வீடு? மீனாக்ஷி வீடா? நடராஜர் வீடா?

Madurai is our town. It is a big town.
மதுரை அம்மன் கோவில் ஒரு பெரிய கோவில்.
Madurai mother/goddess temple is a big temple. 
இந்த அம்மன் பெயர் மீனாக்ஷி.
This goddess' name is Meenaakshi.

Hart Lesson 3 Plural Commands and Simple Sentences

In Tamil for Beginner's by Hart, the lesson begins with a conversation involving making polite requests.

Some phrases I did not understand from the conversation were:
"இரண்டு பெரும்"
"மிகவும் அதிகம்" I thought each of these meant "a lot"  but they are strung together in one sentence. Is it like, "that is too much" Full sentence is : "டி மிகவும் அதிகம். கொஞ்சம் கொடுங்கள்."


Fill in the blank. My fill ins are in italics.
1. நிஇங்கள் சௌக்கியமா?
2 . இங்கே சாப்பிட்டு.
3 . புஸ்தகம் கொண்டுவா.
4 . இது பூ.
5 . ஒரு பேனா கொடு.
6 . இது மரம் இல்லை.
7. அவர் யார்?
8.   அங்கே உட்கார்.
9. தம்பி, நீ வா.
10. இவர் ஒரு சிநேகிதன்.

Plural Imperative. Basically, to have நீங்கள்  instead of நீ receive a command, we add +ங்கள் to the verb root for the regular command. There is no answer key, so I can't check these, it looks like occasionally you need to change the end letter to end with a "u" vowel sound.
செய் --->  செயுங்கள்
கேள் ---> கேளுங்கள்
பார்  ---> பாருங்கள்
வா  ---> வாருங்கள்
இரு  ---> இருங்கள்
உட்கார்  ---> உட்காருங்கள்
நில்  ---> நிலுங்கள்
போ  ---> பொருங்கள்
 பேசு --->  பேசுங்கள்

English sentences to translate into Tamil
1. Come here, sit down.  இங்கே வா, உட்கார்.
2.  Whose flowers are these? யார் இந்தப் பூ? or is it யார் இந்தப் பூயா?
3. Is his friend a Tamil student? அவன் சிநேகிதன் தமிழ் மாணவன்?
4. This is his friend. இவர்(இந்த?) அவன் சிநேகிதன்.
5. Is this a fruit or a flower? இது பாசமா பூயா?

Video Lesson #5

I have been working on Video Lesson 5 from The Tamil Language in Context page produced by the University of Pennsylvania and the South Asian Language Center.

I can read the text, but following along is so hard!  I am trying to listen to and read each line together. I listen to a line, go back, listen again, read the line, try to say it myself, listen again.  What I especially like about their page is that I can toggle between written Tamil, spoken Tamil and the English translation, but even so, sometimes the pronunciation sounds different than what is written under "spoken Tamil."

My pronunciation notes below the cut. These are not formal transliterations, instead, what the word sounds like to me.

This is based on a flashcard set made by a member of livemocha
Some of the transliterations are not quite how Azhagi or blogger would do them, so I am looking up the words and transliterating back into written Tamil.

Some basics

Based on lesson 1 from the University of Pennsylvania/ South Asian Language Center's Tamil Site
