Defective Verbs: Know and Understand

Know and Understand can take past, present and future forms in Tamil.
Both verbs also use the subject in the dative case. So instead of "I know", it translates a little more like, "it is known to me."

Past: Knew: தெரிந்தது
Present: Know: தெரிகிறது
Future: Will know: தெரியும்
Pres/Past Negative: Did not/do not know: தெரியவில்லை
Future Negative: Will not know: தெரியாது

Past: Understood:  புரிந்தது
Present: Understand: புரிகிறது
Future: Will Understand: புரியும்
Pres/Past Negative: Did not/do not understand: புரியவில்லை
Future Negative: Will not understand:  புரியாது


Remember that habitual actions take the future tense (even though they take present tense in English) so you may end up using the future forms of these verbs more often, because it does not just mean "I will know" or "I will understand" but also to inform of a general understanding as well.

Tamil Reading "Boat"

This Tamil reading assignment is the first story from the stories pdf available on the Duke University Page.

It uses present tense, future tense, defective verbs, and the dative and locative noun cases. The pdf provides an extensive vocabulary list, so it is still at a beginner's level.

தோணி
     காவிரியில் வெள்ளம் இருக்கிறது.  நான் திருச்சியில் இருக்கிறேன். அக்கறைக்கு போக வேண்டும்.  பேருந்து கிடையாது.  புகைவண்டி கிடையாது. ஆற்றங்கரையில் ஒரு தோணி இருக்கிறது. நான் தொனிக்கரனிடம் "என்னை அக்கறைக்கு கொண்டு போ. உனக்கு பத்து வெள்ளியை கொடுப்பேன்." என்று சொல்கிறேன். அவன் "சரி" என்று சொல்கிறான்.
     இப்போது தோணி ஆற்றின் நடுவில் இருக்கிறது. நானும் தோணிக்காரனும் தொனியில் இருக்கிறோம். நான் அவனிடம் சொல்கிறேன், "தம்பி! நீ இளைஞன். உனக்கு படிக்க தெரியுமா?"
     "இல்லை"
     "அடடா! நீ வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னேருநாயா?! உன் வாழ்க்கை பாதி வீண்."
     "ஐயா!   உங்கள் நீச்சல் தெரியுமா?"
     "தெரியாது."
     "அடடா! உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் வீண். தோணியில் ஓட்டை இருக்கிறது. எனக்கு நீச்சல் தெரியும்."

Boat
     In the Kaveri river, there is a flood. I am in Thiruchi. I want to go to that shore. There is no bus. There is no train. On the riverbank, there is a boat.  I to the boat man say "Take me to that shore. I will give you ten [Singapore] dollars."  He says "ok."
     Now the boat  is in the middle of the river. The boatman and I are in the boat. I say to him "Younger brother, you are a young man, do you know how to read?"
     "No."
     "Too bad. Will you make progress in life?! Your live is half wasted."
     "Sir, Do you know how to swim?"*
     "I don't know."
     "Too bad. Your life is a complete waste.  There is a hole in the boat. I know how to swim."*

*Literally, it actually says "know swimming" but in English we would use "know how to swim."

Maybe someday I will get some audio of this being read. That would be a nice touch.

This list has each sentence exactly the way it is in the book, with no translation. After the Tamil originals, you will find the Tamil sentences paired with their English equivalent.

          Infinitive followed by finite verbs:

2. உடும்பு மரத்தில் ஏறப் போகிறது. The monitor lizard is going to climb on the tree.
   
3. முரட்டுக் காளை என்னை முட்டப் பார்க்கிறது.  The fierce bull looks to/is going to head-butt me.
   
4. மாணவனை இங்கே வரச் சொல். Tell the student to come here.
