Past and Present Tense Negative

Tamil Past and Present Tense do not form the negative the same way that English does. In English, for past we add "did not _____" and for present "do not_________." In Tamil we take the infinitive of the verb and add --வில்லை. We add --வில்லை for both past and present negative and there is no difference in conjugation based on pronoun. So, "I did not" is the same as "she did not" and "he does not" etc.

1. Translate from Tamil into English
a. அவர்கள் நின்றார்களா? இல்லை, அவர்கள் உட்கார்ந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் உட்காரவில்லை. Did they stand? No, they sat. They didn't sit. (makes no sense as a sequence, but that is how it translates)
b. பாப்பா சிரிக்கிராலா? இல்லை, அவள் அழுகிறாள். Does the baby laugh? No, she cries.
c. நேற்று விட்டுக்குப் போனார்களா? இல்லை இங்கே இருந்தார்கள். இன்று புறப்படுவார்களா? Yesterday did they go to the house? No, they were here. Today will they fly?
d. குழுந்தை தூங்குகிறதா? இல்லை, குழுந்தை விளையாடுகிறது. Does the child sleep? No, the child plays.

2. Translate from English into Tamil.
a. Does he chase the birds? அவன் புறவையை துரத்துகிரானா?
No, he watches the birds. இல்லை, அவன் புறவையை காண்கிறான். (Not sure on the conjugation of this class 5 verb)
b. She does not watch the game.அவள் விளையாட்டை பார்க்கவில்லை.
c. Did you swallow a pill? நீ மாத்திரையை விழுங்குனாயா?
No, you did not swallow a pill. நீ மாத்திரையை விழுங்கவில்லை.
You drank medicine. நீ மருந்தை குடித்தாய்.
d. Is father angry? அப்பா கோபப்படுகிறான?
No, father is not angry. இல்லை, அப்பா கோபப்படவில்லை.
e. Did you all receive a present? நீங்கள் பரிசை பெர்ரிர்களா?
I did not send it. நான் அதனை அனுப்பவில்லை.
f. We did not wear shoes outside. நங்கள் வெளியே செருப்பை அணவில்லை.
g. I did not kick the ball. நான் பந்தை உதக்கவில்லை.
I did not throw the ball. நான் பந்தை ஏறவில்லை.
I hit the ball because I did not win. நான் பந்தை அடித்தேன் அதனால் நான் வெல்லவில்லை. (I am not sure about this one)
h. Did she kill a scorpion? அவள் தேளை கொன்றாளா?
i. We study chemistry. நங்கள் அறிவியலை படிக்கிறோம்.
We do not study math. நங்கள் கணக்கை படிக்கவில்லை.
j. Did it rain? மழை பெய்த்தா?
No, it did not rain. இல்லை, மழை பெய்யவில்லை.
It thundered. இடி இடித்தது.

Past Tense Irregular

Exercise 2: Translate the sentences:

b. They asked a question. அவர்கள் கேள்வியை கேட்டார்கள்.

d. You ate that food. நீ ஆனவை உண்டாய்.

Past Tense Classes 3,4,6,7

Tamil Past Tense Continued (Classes 3,4,6,7)
This post is based on Lesson 17 from "Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf.
Class 5 has irregular forms and will be covered at a later point.

Class 3: Root + ன் + pronoun ending
Class 4 (Root ends in டு): டு --> டட் + pronoun ending
Class 4 (Root ends in று): று --> ற்ற் + pronoun ending
Class 6: Root + த்த் + pronoun ending
Class 7: Root + ந்த் + pronoun ending

Additional conjugations for "it" in Class 3 verbs.
Root + ன் + அது    Example: அது வாங்கினது
Root + ய் + அது     Example: அது வாங்கியது
Root + இற்று         Example: அது வாங்கிற்று 

Exercise 1: Conjugate given the verbs and subjects:
a. நீங்கள் தூங்கிநீர்கள்
b. நாம் புறப்பட்டோம்
c. அவர் இறந்தார்.
d. நீ குளித்தாய்.
e. பறவை பறந்தது
f. மாடு கத்துனது.

Exercise 2: Translate the following sentences:
a. Mother folded the towels. அம்மா துண்டை மடிந்தாள்.
b. I swept the floor again. நான் தரையை மறுபடியும் கூட்டுனேன்.
c. We received a present. நாம் பரிசை பெற்றோம்.
d. The baby walked outside. குழுந்தை வெளியே நடந்தான்.
e. They pulled the rope. அவர்கள் (is rope ஊக? the font is off in the pdf ) ஊகை இழுந்தார்கள்
f. She shot a gun. அவள் துப்பாக்கியை சுட்டாள்.
g. He ate this food. அவன் உணவை சாப்பிட்டான்.
h. The horse jumped over the fence. குதிரை வேலியை தாண்டுனது.
i. I screamed. As a result. my father became angry. நான் கத்துனேன். அதனால் அப்பா கோபப்பட்டான்.

Tamil Past Tense Positive general formation rules

• Class 1:  add -த்  to the root then add the correct pronoun ending
• Class 1b: remove ள்  add -ண்ட்-  to the root then add the correct pronoun ending
• Class 1c: remove ல் add -ன்ற் to the root then add the correct pronoun ending
• Class 2: add -ந்த்  to the root then add the correct pronoun ending
