Tamil Indirect Object

What is the indirect object? The direct object is what actually receives the action. In the sentence, "I hit the ball." the ball is the direct object. If, "I hit the ball to you," "you" are not receiving the action (being hit), but are the indirect recipient because you get the ball. It answers to whom or to what, it can also be used to indicate movement toward a place.

Formation of the Indirect Object/Dative Case

• For nouns ending in டு/று not preceded by a dotted consonant, double the consonant before adding க்கு. (ட்டுக்கு/ற்றுக்கு)
• For nouns ending in ம் change ம் to த்த் before adding உக்கு.
• For nouns ending in ர் or ய் add க்கு.
• For nouns made of one short syllable (vowels அ,இ,உ,எ,ஒ) double the last consonant before adding  உக்கு. If the word has 1 short syllable and ends in ய், follow the ய் rule above.

Lesson 20 Exercise 1:
a. அக்கா அவனுக்குப்  பொம்மையைக் கொடுக்கிறாள்.
Older sister gives the doll to him.
b. எனக்கு ஒரு சட்டையைத் தையுங்கள்.
Stitch a shirt for me!
c. நான் உங்களுக்குப் பரிசுளை வாங்குவேன்.
I will buy a present for you.
d. Father shows the newspaper to us.
அப்பா எங்களுக்கு செய்தித்தாளை காட்டுகிறான்.
e. I drew a picture for her.
 நான் அவளுக்குப் படத்தை வரைந்தேன்.
f. She sold me that ball.
 அவள் எனக்கு அந்த பந்தை விற்றாள். (class 5 ??)
g. They build this house for us.
அவர்கள் எங்களுக்கு இந்த வீட்டை (?) கட்டுநர்கள்.
h. Do not throw the ball to them!
அவர்களுக்குப் பந்தை ஏறிய!
i. I will find a pen for you.
 நான் உனக்குப பென்னவை கண்டுபிடிப்பேன்.
j. Cook food for her!
 அவளுக்கு உணவை சமை!
k. You all do this work for him!
நீங்கள் இந்த வேலையை செயுங்கள்.
Lesson 21 Exercise 2:
a. The bird will fly to Tamil Nadu.
பறவை தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு பறக்கும்.
b. I give a banana to the goat.
நான் ஆட்டுக்கு வாழைப்பழத்தை கொடுக்கறேன்.
c. She walked home.
அவள் வீட்டுக்கு நடந்தாள்
d. We will run to the store.
நாங்கள் கடைக்கு ஓடுவோம்.
e. I give the money to little brother.
நான் தம்பிக்கு பணத்தை தரகிறேன்.
f. Go to the river.
அருக்கு போ.
g. They went to the well. 
அவர்கள் கிணறுக்கு சென்றார்கள்.
h. The farmer gives straw to the cow.
உழவர் மாட்டுக்கு வைக்கோலை தரகிறான்.
Lesson 22 Exercise 2:
a. We will give the shirt to the teacher.
நாம் சட்டையை ஆசிரியர்க்கு கொடுக்கிறோம்.
b. The teacher will teach for money.
ஆசிரியர் பணத்துக்குக் கற்பிப்பார்.
c. I will go to Tamil Eelam.
நான் தமிழீழத்துக்கு செல்வேன்.
d. Do not show the rock to that girl!
கல்லை அந்த பெண்ணுக்கு காட்டாதே! 
e. Father threw a bone to the dog.
அப்பா எலும்பை நாய்க்கு எறிந்தான்.
f. They went to this village.
அவர்கள் இந்த ஊர்க்கு போனான்.
g. Open the door for that son!
கதவை அந்த மகனுக்கு திற!
h. The farmer brings the seeds to the field,.
உசவர் விதையை வயலுக்கு கொண்டுவருகிறேன். ??? (irregular)
i. Mother will wash the dress for this daughter.
அம்மா இந்த மகளுக்குப் பாவாடையை துவைப்பாள்.
j. The driver drove the bus to the bus station.
ஓட்டுநர் பேருந்தை பேருந்து நிலையத்துக்கு ஓட்டுனான்.
