Adverbial Participle Index

Tamil Adverbial Participles are used in complex sentences with more than one verb.  The Adverbial Participle is abbreviated AvP and is also called the Converbial or the Conjunctive Participle. AvP is used in the creation of the continuous and perfect tenses.

Formation of the Positive AvP:
  • For verbs of all classes except class 3, take the past stem and add --உ 
  • For class 3 verbs, take the past stem and add --இ

Positive Adverbial Participle

Examples of different uses of the Tamil Adverbial Participle (AvP) from Lesson 38: "Adverbial Participle,"  Tamil: A Foundation Course by Balasubramaniam. The AvP usage is underlined in each sentence.
English Translations to follow soon. (These are rather complex sentences and it is unfortunate that this book just gives a list of 30+ examples without translation or explanation!)

1.  கந்தன் கடிதம் எழுதிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான்.
Kandhan is writing a letter.
2.  அவன் படுக்கையில் படுத்திருக்கிறான்.
He is lying down in bed [Lit: He has lain down in bed.]
3.  ஆசிரியர் வகுப்புக்கு வந்துவிட்டார்.
The teacher has come to the class. (விட்டு shows the action has completed)
4.  நான் பெட்டியைத் தூக்கிப் பார்த்தேன்.
I lifted the box/bag to see/test/try.
5.  அக்காள் தங்கைக்கு எழுதிக் காட்டினாள்.
Older sister showed younger sister how to write. [Lit: Older sister wrote and showed to younger sister]
6.  நான் பரிசை வாங்கிக் கொண்டேன்.
I had bought the gift. 
7.  சிறுவர்கள் அடித்துக் கொண்டார்கள்.
The children hit each other.
8.  கண்ணாடி உடைந்து போயிற்று.
 The glass/mirror is broken.  போயிற்று=makes past
9.  அவனிடம் அதைக் கொடுத்துத் தொலை.
Give that to him so that he goes away. தொலை=to lose/ get lost.
10.  பழங்களை அவளிடமிருந்து வாங்கி வை.
Take the fruit from her and put [them down].
11.  பையன் சாமான்களை எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தான்.
12.  அந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்து விடு.
13.  அந்தப் பன்றியைக் கொன்றுவிடு.
14. குணசீலன் அந்த வீட்டை வாங்கியும் பயனில்லை.
15.  நல்ல மருந்து கொடுத்தும் வியாதியைக் கும்ச்ப்படுத்த முடியவில்லை.
16. குழந்தைக்குச் செல்லம் கொடுத்துக் கொடுத்துக் கொடுத்து விட்டாய்.
17.  குடித்துக் குடித்து அவன் குடல் வெந்து செத்தான்.
18.  கத்திக் கத்தி நா வறண்டு விட்டது.
19.  சிறுவன் பந்தைத் தூக்கி எறிந்தான்.
20.  அவன் தன் தாயை வணங்கிச் சென்றான்.
21.  அவன் எனக்கு ஒரு பொம்மையைச் செய்து தந்தான்.
22.  எலி பொந்தில் மெல்ல நுழைந்து வந்தது.
23.  பறவை வானில் மெல்ல பறந்து வந்தது.
24.  நான் நண்பனை நேற்றுப் பார்த்துப் பேசினேன்.
25.  சிறுவர்கள் ஆற்றில் நீந்தி விளையாடுகிறார்கள்.
26.  அவன் கொட்டிலுக்குச் சென்று சாமி கும்பிட்டு வீடு திரும்பினான்.
27.  நான் காலையில் எழுந்து பல் துலக்கிப் பலகாரம் சாப்பிட்டு பஸ்ஸில் ஏறிப் பல்கலைக் கழகம் சென்றேன்.
28.  மாணவன் பாடத்தை நன்றாகக் கற்றுச் சென்றான்.
29.  மாதவன் மரத்தில் ஏறி கால் வழுக்கிக் கீழே விழுந்தான்.
30.  அவள் பாட்டை நன்றாகப் பாடிச் சென்றாள்.
31.  பழங்களை பறித்துக் கொடு.
32.  அவன் சர்க்கரையை அளந்து கட்டிக் கொடுத்தான்.

Tamil Reading: Good Man

நல்லவர் "Good Man"
Reading Lesson #5 (page 11-13) from the Intermediate Coursebook pdf provided by the University of Michigan's Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition.

1.  அவர் மிகவும் பெரியவர்.
He is a very great person,
2.  ஒரு காலத்தில் ஏழையாக இருந்தார்.
At one time, he was poor.
3.  அவர்களுடைய குடும்பத்தில் படித்தவர்கள் யாரும் இல்லை.
In their family, no one was educated.
4.  அதனால் அவர் நன்றாகப் படித்தார்.
Because of that, he studied well (hard).
5.  மருத்துவம் படிக்க அவருக்கு இடம் கிடைத்தது.
A place was found for him to study medicine.
6.  படித்து முடித்ததும் மருத்துவத் தொழில் ஆரம்பித்தார்.
After finishing studying/studies, he started work/profession/career in medicine.
7.  ஒரு சிறிய ஆஸ்பத்திரி தொங்கினார்.
He started a small hospital.
8.  அங்கே வரும் மக்களிடம் மிக அன்பாகவும் ஆதரவாகவும் நடந்து கொண்டார்.
For people who came there, he was very kind and reassuring.
9.  இது அங்கே வாழ்கிற மக்களுக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தது.
This, the people who lived there liked a lot/very much.
10.  அதனால் அவருடைய ஆஸ்பத்திரி நன்றாக நடந்தது.
Because of that, his hospital was good [verb: walk/happen].
11.  சிறிய ஆஸ்பத்திரி பெரியதாக வளர்ந்தது.
The little hospital grew big.
12.  ஏழை மக்களுக்கு இலவசமாக மருத்துவ உதவி செய்தார், அவர்.
To poor people he provided/gave [lit: did] free medical help.
13.  அதுவும் நல்ல முறையில் இந்த உதவி மக்களுக்கு கிடைத்தது.
How to rewrite literal translation:  And that good manners this help to the people gave
14.  அரசாங்கம் அவருடைய ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு வேண்டிய கருவிகளை வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தது.
The government gave instruments to his hospital.
15.  அதை விரிவுபடுத்த நிதி உதவியும் செய்தது.
Those extension treasures and donations did help.
16.  அவரும் இந்த வாய்ப்பைப் பயன் படுத்தி, ஆஸ்பத்திரியை மிகவும் பெரியதாக அருவாக்கினார்.
And he made use of this opportunity.
17.  அவருடைய சேவையைப் பாராட்டி அரசு அவருக்கு நல்ல மனிதர் என்ரவிருதை வழங்கியது.
The government congratulates him for his service and grants that he is a good man.
18.  மக்கள் எல்லோரும் அவருக்குப் பாராட்டு தெரிவித்தார்கள்.
All the people inform congratulations to him.
19.  அவருடைய முயற்சி, உழைப்பு, அன்பு, ஆதரவு இவை எல்லாம் அவருக்கு உதவியாக இருந்தன.
His effort, handiwork, love support; these all helped him.
20.  ஒரு மனிதனுக்கு இவை எல்லாம் வேண்டும்.
A person should want all these.
21.  அப்பொழுதுதான் மனிதன் நன்றாக வாழ முடியும்.
Only then can man (human-kind, people) live well.
22.  இந்த மருத்துவரை இப்பொழுது ஊரே பாராட்டுகிறது.
The whole village congratulates this doctor.
23.  இதுக்குக் காரணம் அவருடைய நல்ல மனசும் கருணையும் தான்.
24.  வாழ்க! அந்த நல்லவர்!
Long live this good man.

தமிழ் நாடு / Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is the fourth story in the Duke collection.
1.  இந்தப் படத்தைப் பாருங்கள்.
Look at this picture.
2.  இது தமிழ் நாட்டின் படம்.
It is Tamil Nadu's picture.
3.  தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு தென்கிழக்கே இலங்கை இருக்கிறது.
To the southeast of Tamil Nadu is Sri Lanka.
4.  இலங்கைக்கு வேறு பெரிய இருக்கிறது.
Sri Lanka has another name.
5.  அது ஈழம்.
It is "Eelam."
6.  தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு வட கிழக்கில் ஆந்திரா இருக்கிறது.
To the north of Tamil Nadu is Andhra.
7.  இதனுடைய முழப்பெயர் ஆந்திரப் பிரதேசம்.
It's full name is Andhra Pradesh.
8.  தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு வட மேற்கில் கருனாடகம் இருக்கிறது.
To the north west of Tamil Nadu is Karnataka.
9.  முன்னே இதன் பெயர் மைசூர்.
Before (ithan ?) name Maichoor.
10.  தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு மேற்கே கோளா இருக்கிறது.
To the west of Tamil Nadu is Kerala.
11.  தமிழ் நாட்டின் தலை நகரம் சென்னை.
Tamil Nadu's capital city is Chennai.
12.  இதன் ஆங்கிலப்பெயர் மதராசு.
(?) English name is Madras.
13.  இது கடற்கரையில் இருக்கிறது.
It is on the ocean shore.
14.  இந்த நகரத்தில் துறைமுகம் இருக்கிறது.
There is a harbor in this city.
15.  தென் ஆசியாவின் முக்கியத் துறைமுகங்களில் இது ஒன்று.
(?) Among harbors in South Asia, it is an important one.
16.  சென்னையின் மக்கள் தொகை 20 இலட்சம்;அதாவது 2,000,000.
Chennai's population is 20 lakhs (=100,000), in other words, 2,000,000.
17.  தமிழ் நாட்டில் வேறு பெரிய ஊர்கள் இருக்கின்றன்.
In Tamil Nadu, there are other big towns/cities.
18.  அவை மதுரை, திருச்சிராப்பள்ளி, சேலம், கோயம்புத்தூர், தஞ்சாவூர்.
They are Madurai, Thiruchirappalli, Salem, Coimbatore, Thanjavur.
19.  மதுரை தமிழ் நாட்டின் மிகப் பழைய நகரம்.
Madurai is Tamil Nadu's very old (most old?) city.
20. இது முன்னே பாண்டியர்களின் தலை நகரம்.
Before, it is the Pantiyar's capital city.
21.  தஞ்சாவூர் காவிரி (காவேரி) ஆற்றின் கரையில் இருக்கிறது.
Thanjavur has Kaveri river's shore.
22.  இது முன்னே சோழர்களின் தலை நகரம்.
Before it is the Sozar's capital city
23.  கோயம்புத்தூரில் நிறைய ஆலைகள் இருக்கின்றன்.
In Coimbatore there are a lot of mills.
24.  இது ஒரு தொழில் நகரம்.
It is an industrial city.

Tamil Reading: Our Uncle Comes

எங்கள் மாமா வருகிறார்/enga maamaa varRaaru
எங்கள் மாமா வருகிறார் is Lesson 4 from the Intermediate Coursebook pdf provided by the University of Michigan's Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition.  This reading comes with two "versions" one in the written style, one in the spoken style. In the original pdf, the spoken style is still written using the Tamil orthography. Blogger automatically corrects the "incorrect" spellings of spoken Tamil, so I will write the spoken portions in italicized Roman characters when I get around to that part.

1.  எங்கள் மாமா இன்று ஊரிலிருந்து இங்கே வருகிறார்.
 enga maamaa innekki uurulerunthu.
My uncle comes here today from the village.
2.  அவருடைய ஊர் மதுரை.
His village is Madurai.
3.  அவருடைய பெயர் நாயகன்.
His name is Nayagan.
4.  அவர் முதல் தடவையாக இப்பொழுது சென்னைக்கு வருகிறார்.
He comes to Chennai for the first time.
5.  இதுக்கு மண்ணால் வந்தது இல்லை.
Hadn't come to it before.
6.  மாமா எங்களோடு ஒரு மாதம் தங்கி இருப்பார்.
Uncle will be staying with me one month.
7.  அவர் இன்று ரயிலில் வருகிறார்.
Today he comes by train.
8.  அந்த ரயில் மதுரையில் காலை ஆறு மணிக்குப் புறப்படுகிறது.
That train starts in Madurai at 6 in the morning.
9.  சென்னைக்கு இரவு ஏழு மணிக்கு வருகிறது.
The train comes to Chennai at 7 at night.
10.  மாமாவைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வர நான் எழும்பூர் ரயில் நிலையம் போகிறேன்.
I am going to the "Egmore" railway station to bring uncle with me.
11.  எங்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து சரியாக ஆறு மணிக்குக் கிளம்ப வேண்டும்.
We want to start from our house at exactly 6.
12.  என்னோடு மகள் மாதவியும் வருகிறாள்.
My daughter Maathavi comes too.
13.  மாதவி இப்பொழுது பள்ளியில் ஐந்தாவது படிக்கிறாள்.
 Maathavi now studies 5th grade (?) in school.
14.  அவள் மாமாவை இதுவரை பார்த்தது இல்லை.
She has not seen uncle before [lit: till now].
15.  மாமா பெரிய பணக்காரர்.
Uncle is a very [literally: big] rich man.
16.  அவர் மிக நல்லவர்.
 He is a very good person.
17.  எல்லோருக்கும் தேவையான் உதவி செய்கிறார்.
To all of us he does necessary help.
18.  அவருக்கு குழந்தைகள் இல்லை.
He has no children. [Lit: To him, no children.]
19.  அவர் நல்ல பக்தர்.
He is a good devotee.
20.  சென்னையிலிருந்து இப்படியே திருப்பதி போவார்.
From Chennai in this way he will go to Thiruppathi.
21.  திருப்பதி கோவில் மிகவும் பெரியது.
The Thiruppathi temple is a very big one.
22. அது மலைமேல் இருக்கிறது.
It is on that hill.
23.  நாங்களும் அவரோடு திருப்பதி போக வேண்டும்.
We also want to go to Thiruppathi with him.
