Tamil Reading: சொர்க்கத்தில் நரி Jackal in the Abode of the Gods

This is the first reading selection from the Tamil Nadu textbook Standard 4 Tamil Reader. It occurs on pages 1-2, with worksheets on 2-4.  (It is pages 11-14 in the pdf.)
Remember there are more publicly available textbooks from the government of Tamil Nadu.

Jackal in Heaven (Tamil Children's Story)

Numbered sentences should make this easier for you to work with:

    (1) நரி ஒன்று தாகத்தால் தவித்தது. (2) எங்கும் தண்ணீர் கிடைக்கவில்லை.
    (3) என்ன செய்வது -- ?
    (4) தண்ணீரைத் தேடி அலைந்தது.  (5) தூரத்தில் கிணறு ஒன்று இருப்பதைப் பார்த்தது; கிணற்றின் அருகே சென்றது. (6) கிணற்றில், கயிற்றின் ஒரு முனையில் வாளி ஒன்று தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது. (7) அதைக் கண்ட நரி, வாளியில் தாவி ஏறி அமர்ந்தது.  (8) உடனே வாளி 'விரி'ரெனக் கிணற்றின் உள்ளே சென்றது.  (9) நரி வயிறு நிறையத் தண்ணீரைக் குடித்தது.  (10) தாகம் தணிந்தபின் மேலே பார்த்தது.  (11) 'எப்படி வெளியேறுவது' என்று யோசிக்கத் தொடங்கியது.
    (12) 'மேலேயிருந்தது யாராவது கயிற்றை இழுத்தால்தானே நாம் மேலே செல்ல முடியும். என்ன செய்வது?'
    (13) நேரம் ஆக ஆக நரிக்கு அச்சம் தோன்றியது.
    (14) அந்த நேரம் பார்த்துக் கிணற்றின் அருகே ஓநாய் ஒன்று வந்தது.  (15) கிணற்றின் உள்ளே எட்டிப் பார்த்தது.
    (16) அங்கு நரி இருப்பதைக் கண்டது. (17) "அட்டா! நரியா! உள்ளே என்ன செய்கிறாய்?" எனக் கேட்டது.
    (18) "நான் இப்போது சொர்க்கத்தில் இருக்கிறேன். (19) என்ன அருமையான இடம் தெரியுமா? (20) இங்கு மீன், கோழி, ஆடு எல்லாம் தருகிறார்கள்." என்றுது நரி.
    (21) ஓநாய் சற்றும் யோசிக்காமல் கயிற்றின் மறுமுனையில் கட்டப் பட்டிருந்த வாளிக்குள் குதித்தது.  (22) அந்த வாளி 'சரசர'வென்று கிணற்றின் உள்ளே போயிற்று.  (23) அப்போது நரி அமர்ந்திருந்த வாளி மேலே வந்தது.
    (24) நரி மேலே வரும்போது பாதி வழியில் ஓநாயை பார்த்தது.
    (25) "நான் இப்போது சொர்க்கத்திற்கும் மேலான இடத்திற்குப் போகிறேன்," என்று கூறிக்கொண்டே மேலே சென்றது. (26) மேலே வந்ததும் கிணற்றுச் சுவரின் மீது தாவிக் குதித்துத் தப்பியோடிய்து.  (27) பாவம் ஓநாய்...!
    (28) ஒரு செயலைச் செய்வதற்கு முன் பல முறை யோசிக்க வேண்டும் அல்லவா?

This is a story about how to get down the toy that has gotten stuck at the top of the building.
Let's take a look at the vocabulary and grammar of it.
These are definitions from the Fabricius dictionary

• உறவு (p. 124) [ uṟavu ] , s. consanguinity, affinity, relationship
• அமுதம்= ambrosia, nectar, water, rain (probably used as a name here)
• தங்கை= younger sister
• விளையாடு= play
• what tense is விளையாடுகின்றனர்?

• முயற்சி= exertion, effort
• செய்= to do

• முயலு, I. v. i. make continued exertion

அம்மா வருகிறார்.
Mother comes.
அம்மாவால் எடுக்க முடியவில்லை.

தாத்தா உதவுகிறார்.
Grandfather helps.

Question at the bottom reads:
வளையப் பந்தை எடுக்க அமுதனுக்கு உதவுபவர்கள் யார்? யார்?
வளைய= to bend, curve, relating to circles and bracelets...
பந்தை=accusative form of bandhu பந்து, ball
=Who helped take the ring-ball to Amuthan? Who?

Reviews of Favorite Tamil Resources

There are a number of resources available for learning Tamil. Sometimes it can be hard to navigate or find things at the correct level. This is my current list of resources, which I update regularly.
