Negative Imperatives

2.  நாயின் மேல் கல்லை எறியாதே. Don't throw a rock toward the dog.
3.  உண்மையைக் கூறத் தயங்காதே.  Don't confuse part of the truth. (???)
4.  அந்த மனிதனுடன் பழகாதே.  Don't be acquainted with that man.
5.  பணத்தை வங்கியில் கோடாதே.  Don't put money in the bank.
6.  பழத்தின் தோலை கோடாதே.  I need to check the originals for these verbs.
7.  பழத்தின் தோலை உரிக்காதே. Don't drop the skin off of the fruit.

I covered positive commands in both regular and respective forms. Now here is how to do a negative command.

Negative command = infinitive + ஆதே
Negative respectful command = infinitive + ஆதீர்கள்

Exercises below come from Lesson 15 of the Duke pdf Learn Tamil Through English

1. Translate the sentences into regular and respective commands:
a. Do not watch the television! Read this book!
regular: டோளைக்கட்சியை பார்க்காதே. இந்த நூல் படி.
respect: டோளைக்கட்சியை பார்க்காதீர்கள். இந்த நூல் படிங்கள்.
b. Do not play here! Go outside!
regular: இங்கே விளையாடாதே. வெளியே போ.
respect: இங்கே விளையாடாதீர்கள். வெளியே போங்கள்.
c. Do not bite the candy! Suck it!
regular: மிட்டாயை கடிக்காதே. இதை சப்பு.
respect:. மிட்டாயை கடிக்காதீர்கள். இதை சப்புங்கள்.
d. Do not buy this shirt! Buy that doll!
regular: இந்த சட்டையை வாங்காதே. பொம்மையை வாங்கு.

The Respective Command (Duke pdf)

When making a polite request/command, we don't use the same regular command form.
The Tamil Respective Command is created by adding -ங்கள் to the verb root.
Verbs ending in இ and ஐ take -யுங்கள்  added to the verb root.
Verbs ending in a consonant, double the consonant before adding -ங்கள் to the verb root.
* The Duke pdf uses exclamation points (!) to denote a command sentence.

Exercises:
1. Translate into Tamil.
a. Buy this dress!  இந்த பாவாடையை வாங்குங்கள்.
b. Eat the cooked rice! சோறை உண்ணுங்கள்.
c. Put the bag down! பையை போடுங்கள்.
d. Help the girl! பெண்ணை உதவுங்கள்.
e. Call him! அவனை கூப்பிடுங்கள்.
f. Do the work! வேலையை செய்யுங்கள்.
g. Look here! இங்கே காண்ணுங்கள்

2. Translate sentences into English
a. வெளியே போங்கள்.
Go outside!
b. கதவைத் திறங்கள்.
Open the door!
c. இந்த நூலை படியுங்கள்.
Study/read this book!
d. ஒரு பாட்டைப் பாடுங்கள்.

Sample Infinitive Sentences from Balasubramaniam's Tamil: A Foundation Course. Formation of the infinitive is discussed in an earlier post, here.

This list has each sentence exactly the way it is in the book, with no translation. After the Tamil originals, you will find the Tamil sentences paired with their English equivalent.

          Infinitive followed by finite verbs:

Infinitives and Negative Imperatives

This post is based on Tamil for Beginners by Hart, Lesson 4.

Infinitives in Tamil are used in a similar way to infinitives in English. We also use the infinitive as a base for creating the negative imperative form. In regular English: make the verb the equivalent of "to do", "to say" etc. in English (that's the infinitive) and then add an ending making it a negative command "don't do", "don't say."

Making an infinitive is somewhat complicated and will probably be discussed in a separate post later on.

To make a negative command, take the infinitive form of the verb and add --அதே to make a singular negative command and add --அதீர்கள் to make a plural/polite negative command. All infinitives seem to end in an அ making it a long ஆ when the two components are combined.

Hart Lesson 3 Plural Commands and Simple Sentences

In Tamil for Beginner's by Hart, the lesson begins with a conversation involving making polite requests.

Some phrases I did not understand from the conversation were:
"இரண்டு பெரும்"
"மிகவும் அதிகம்" I thought each of these meant "a lot"  but they are strung together in one sentence. Is it like, "that is too much" Full sentence is : "டி மிகவும் அதிகம். கொஞ்சம் கொடுங்கள்."


Fill in the blank. My fill ins are in italics.
1. நிஇங்கள் சௌக்கியமா?
2 . இங்கே சாப்பிட்டு.
3 . புஸ்தகம் கொண்டுவா.
4 . இது பூ.
5 . ஒரு பேனா கொடு.
6 . இது மரம் இல்லை.
7. அவர் யார்?
8.   அங்கே உட்கார்.
9. தம்பி, நீ வா.
10. இவர் ஒரு சிநேகிதன்.

Plural Imperative. Basically, to have நீங்கள்  instead of நீ receive a command, we add +ங்கள் to the verb root for the regular command. There is no answer key, so I can't check these, it looks like occasionally you need to change the end letter to end with a "u" vowel sound.
செய் --->  செயுங்கள்
கேள் ---> கேளுங்கள்
பார்  ---> பாருங்கள்
வா  ---> வாருங்கள்
இரு  ---> இருங்கள்
உட்கார்  ---> உட்காருங்கள்
நில்  ---> நிலுங்கள்
போ  ---> பொருங்கள்
 பேசு --->  பேசுங்கள்

English sentences to translate into Tamil
1. Come here, sit down.  இங்கே வா, உட்கார்.
2.  Whose flowers are these? யார் இந்தப் பூ? or is it யார் இந்தப் பூயா?
3. Is his friend a Tamil student? அவன் சிநேகிதன் தமிழ் மாணவன்?
4. This is his friend. இவர்(இந்த?) அவன் சிநேகிதன்.
5. Is this a fruit or a flower? இது பாசமா பூயா?
