நினைப்பும் நடப்பும் "A Thought and an Event"

"A Thought and an Event" is the sixth story in the Duke collection.

1.  காலையில் ஞாயிறு உதித்தது.
In the morning the sun rose.
2.  குளத்தில் தாமரை பூ மலர்ந்தது.
In the pond, the lotus flower bloomed.
3.  ஒரு தேனீ அங்கே வந்த தாமரை பூவில் உர்கார்ந்தது/இருந்தது.
A honeybee came and sat in the lotus flower.
4.  பூவிளிருன்தது தேனை குடித்தது.
It was in the flower drinking honey.
5.  ஆனால் அதனுடைய ஆசை குறையவில்லை.
But it's desire did not subside.
6.  அது பகல் முழுவதும் தேனை குடித்தது.
It drank honey the entire day.
7.  மாலை நேரத்தில் தாமரை பூ கூம்பினது.
In the evening, the lotus flower closed.
8.  தேனீ தாமரை பூவுக்குள் இருந்தது.
The honey bee was inside the lotus flower.
9.  தேனீயால் வெளியே வர முடிவில்லை.
As a result the honey bee could not come outside.
10.  ஆனால் அது கவலைப்படவில்லை.
However, it did not worry.
11.  "நான் இந்த பூவுக்குள் இரவு தங்குவேன்.
I will stay inside this flower tonight.
12.  பெழுது விடியும்.
In time it will become light.
13.  ஞாயிறு உதிக்கும்.
The sun will rise.
14.  காமரை  மறுபடியும் மலரும்.
The lotus will bloom again.
15.  அப்போது நான் வெளியே பறப்பேன்."
Then I will fly outside."
16.  என்று தேனீ நினைத்தது.
thought the bee.
17.  அப்போது அங்கே ஒரு யானை வந்தது.
Then here came an elephant.
18.  தண்ணீரில் இறங்கினது.
 It descended in the water.
19.  யானையின் காலுக்கு அடியில் தாமரை பூ சிக்கினது.
 The flower got tangled under the elephant's foot.
20.  பூ நசுங்கினது.
The flower was crushed.
21.  தேனீ இறந்தது.
The honey bee died.

Tamil Children's Song: Monkey

A Tamil Children's Song about a Monkey

Lyrics and translation:
குரங்கு நல்ல குரங்கு
குற்றாலத்துக் குரங்கு!
மரத்தின் மேலே ஏறும்
மலையின் உச்சி சேரும்!
பொட்டுக் கடலை பொறுக்கும்
பொருளை எல்லாம் இறைக்கும்!
குட்டிக் கரணம் போடும்
கம்பைக் கண்டால் அடும்.

Monkey, good monkey
Monkey of Kutralam,
It will climb the tree's top,
It will arrive at the mountain's zenith
It will pick lentils
It will knock over/make dirty all things
Little-one will go somersault
It dances to the stick.

Note: I have translated using future tense, but I think this is a place in which Tamil future tense is used to indicate habitual actions.

குரங்கு monkey
உச்சி crown of the head, midday, zenith
குற்றாலம் Kutralam, a place in Southern India famous for waterfalls
சேர் approach, draw near
பொட்டுக் கடலை a kind of lentil (பொட்டு = dot)
பொறு pick up
பொருளை things
எல்லாம் all
இறை ruin things, make dirty, knock down, etc.

பசங் காலத்து மீன் 
முதலில் மீனாகத் தான் கடவுள் அவதாரம் எடுத்தார் என்று இந்தியார்கள் நம்புகிறார்கள். முதல் மீன் எப்போது தோன்றியது?  சமீபத்திய ஆய்வுகளை படி சீனாவில் உள்ள சென்ங்க்ஜியங் என்று இடத்தில் 530 மில்லியன் வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு வாழ்ந்து மடிந்த இரண்டு மீன்களைக் கண்டு பிடித்துள்ளனர். இவை ஒன்றிலிருந்து மற்றொன்று வேறு பட்டுள்ளன. இரண்டுக்கும் பொதுவான மூதாதை மீன் இன்னும் 50 மில்லியன் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு  முன்பு வாழ்ந்திருக்கலாம் என்று விஞ்ஞானிகள் கூறுகிறார்கள்.  முன்பு நம்பப்பட்ட முடிவைவிட இது மேலும் 50 மில்லியன் ஆண்டுகள் மீனின் வயதை அதிகமாக்கி விட்டது.

யாருக்கும் அஞ்சா யானை

பல்லைக் காட்டா யானை
Teeth ____ elephant
முறத்ததைப் போலக் காது

முன்னால் வீசும் யானை
சிறிய கோலிக் குண்டாய்
Short hair ______
சின்னக் கண்கள் யானை
Small eye elephant
முன்னங்காலை மடக்கி

vocab முன்னங்கால், the skin or forepart of the leg; 2. the fore-feet of a quadruped. 
முன்னங்கை, the forearm from the fingers to the elbow.

This is from Section 3 of Unit 1. Unit 1 spans 20 pages, some are sample sentences, others are  worksheets. I won't recreate everything here, but instead focus on translations and vocabulary.

I have color coded each Tamil/English sentence pair since the sentence word order differs.  This also shows you how certain English words are unnecessary or implied in Tamil.

இது சிங்கம், சிங்கம் விளங்குகளில் வலியது.
This is a lion, the lion is strong among the animals.

இது யானை, யானை விலங்குகளில் பெரியது.
This is an elephant, the elephant is big among the animals.

அது மான், மான் சாதுவான விலங்கு.
That is a deer, the deer is a gentle animal.

இது கங்காரு, இது ஒரு ஆஸ்திரேலியா விளங்கு, இது இந்தியக் காடுகளில் இல்லை.
This is a kangaroo, it is an Australian animal, it is not native in the forest in India. (native is my best guess for காடுகளில்)

அது தான் சிட்டுக்குருவி, சிட்டுக்குருவி புறவைகளில்  சிறியது.
That is indeed a sparrow, the sparrow is small among birds.

இது மயில், மயில் ஆழகானது, இது இந்திய தேசியப்பறவை.
This is a peacock, the peacock is beautiful, it is India's national bird.
