Tamil Children's News: Fish

Here is a short news article about Ancient Fish in Tamil and in English from the February 2000 Chandamama magazine. Click the images to see them larger and more clearly.

Tamil text reads:
பசங் காலத்து மீன் 
முதலில் மீனாகத் தான் கடவுள் அவதாரம் எடுத்தார் என்று இந்தியார்கள் நம்புகிறார்கள். முதல் மீன் எப்போது தோன்றியது?  சமீபத்திய ஆய்வுகளை படி சீனாவில் உள்ள சென்ங்க்ஜியங் என்று இடத்தில் 530 மில்லியன் வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு வாழ்ந்து மடிந்த இரண்டு மீன்களைக் கண்டு பிடித்துள்ளனர். இவை ஒன்றிலிருந்து மற்றொன்று வேறு பட்டுள்ளன. இரண்டுக்கும் பொதுவான மூதாதை மீன் இன்னும் 50 மில்லியன் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு  முன்பு வாழ்ந்திருக்கலாம் என்று விஞ்ஞானிகள் கூறுகிறார்கள்.  முன்பு நம்பப்பட்ட முடிவைவிட இது மேலும் 50 மில்லியன் ஆண்டுகள் மீனின் வயதை அதிகமாக்கி விட்டது.

Verbs, root and infinitive

Tamil verb roots are followed by English translation in parentheses and then by the Tamil Infinitive
Generally the infinitive is formed :
Class 1-5 add அ
Class 6-7 add க்க
Irregular verbs are included in this list and should be in their correct irregular form!

Direct Object cont (Duke pdf)

Additional Tamil Direct Object Rules from Lesson 8 of the"Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf.
அ, இ, உ, எ, ஒ are short vowels. When a single syllable word contains a short vowel, to form the direct object we double the consonant and add ஐ.

Here are the exercises:
Change noun to direct object:
a. தூண் ... தூண்ணை (column/pillar)
b. பெண் ... பெண்ணை (girl)
c. ஆண் ... ஆண்ணை (boy/male)
d. கடிதம் ... கடிதத்தை (letter)
e. காலை ... காலையை   (morning)
f. தமிழீழம் ... தமிழீழத்தை
g. முள் ... முள்ளை (thorn)
h. கோபம் ... கோபத்தை (anger)
i. நிலம் ... நிலத்தை (land)
j. தண்ணீர் ... தண்ணரை (water)
k.மழை ... மழையை (rain)
l. வாய் ... வாய்யை (mouth)
m. வண்டி ... வண்டியை (cart)

Translation:
a. She writes the letter.
அவள் கடிதத்தை எழுதுகிறாள்.
b. We drink water.
நங்கள் தண்ணீரை குடிக்கிறோம்.
c. They plow the land.
அவர்கள் நிலத்தை உழுகிறார்கள்.
d. I open an eye.
நான் ஒரு கண்ணை திறக்கிறேன்.
e. The cart goes.
வண்டி போகிறது.
f. The king says it.
கோ அதை சொல்கிறான்.
g. Father throws this rock.
அப்பா இந்த கல்லை எறிகிறான்.
h. He sees the girl/ looks at the girl.
அவன் பெண்ணை காண்கிறன். *this is class 5, how do I conjugate it?

Tamil: A Foundation Course, Unit 29, covers the different verb endings based on the pronoun doing the action. As a result, we get a comparison of the past, present and future tenses.

Here I have copied the written and spoken variations of the text and done a line by line translation of the written version at the bottom of this post.

Written language:
நீங்கள் மதுரையா? சிதம்பரமா?

மதுரை எங்கள் ஊர். இது பெரிய ஊர். மதுரை அம்மன் கோவில் ஒரு பெரிய கோவில். இந்த அம்மன் பெயர் மீனாக்ஷி. நீங்கள் மதுரையா சிதம்பரமா? சிதம்பரமும் ஒரு அழகான ஊர். சிதம்பரம் சிவன் கோவில் ஒரு அழகான கோவில். இந்தச் சிவன் பெயர் நடராஜர்.

நடராஜர் வீடு எங்கள் உள்ளம். அவருடைய ஆட்டம் எங்கள் மகிழ்ச்சி. உங்கள் உள்ளம் யார் வீடு? மீனாக்ஷி வீடா? நடராஜர் வீடா?

This is a story about how to get down the toy that has gotten stuck at the top of the building.
Let's take a look at the vocabulary and grammar of it.
These are definitions from the Fabricius dictionary
  • உறவு (p. 124) [ uṟavu ] , s. consanguinity, affinity, relationship
  • அமுதம்= ambrosia, nectar, water, rain (probably used as a name here)

    Colors

    Colors are interesting... when I was taking beginning anthropology, we briefly touched upon the fact that different cultures perceive colors differently. So, even though you can translate a name, it may not be exactly the same color from one language to the other.

    Here is a clip from the book Tamil Self Taught, which does not use the orthography. The first column is English, the second is the transliteration, and the third is a pronunciation guide.


    So, now I am matching these up with the written Tamil I have record of in other places. In some cases the words match, in others, they seem wildly different.
