Adverbial Participle Index

Tamil Adverbial Participles are used in complex sentences with more than one verb.  The Adverbial Participle is abbreviated AvP and is also called the Converbial or the Conjunctive Participle. AvP is used in the creation of the continuous and perfect tenses.

Formation of the Positive AvP:

• For verbs of all classes except class 3, take the past stem and add --உ 
• For class 3 verbs, take the past stem and add --இ

Positive Adverbial Participle

Examples of different uses of the Tamil Adverbial Participle (AvP) from Lesson 38: "Adverbial Participle,"  Tamil: A Foundation Course by Balasubramaniam. The AvP usage is underlined in each sentence.
English Translations to follow soon. (These are rather complex sentences and it is unfortunate that this book just gives a list of 30+ examples without translation or explanation!)

1.  கந்தன் கடிதம் எழுதிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான்.
Kandhan is writing a letter.
2.  அவன் படுக்கையில் படுத்திருக்கிறான்.
He is lying down in bed [Lit: He has lain down in bed.]
3.  ஆசிரியர் வகுப்புக்கு வந்துவிட்டார்.
The teacher has come to the class. (விட்டு shows the action has completed)
4.  நான் பெட்டியைத் தூக்கிப் பார்த்தேன்.
I lifted the box/bag to see/test/try.
5.  அக்காள் தங்கைக்கு எழுதிக் காட்டினாள்.
Older sister showed younger sister how to write. [Lit: Older sister wrote and showed to younger sister]
6.  நான் பரிசை வாங்கிக் கொண்டேன்.
I had bought the gift. 
7.  சிறுவர்கள் அடித்துக் கொண்டார்கள்.
The children hit each other.
8.  கண்ணாடி உடைந்து போயிற்று.
 The glass/mirror is broken.  போயிற்று=makes past
9.  அவனிடம் அதைக் கொடுத்துத் தொலை.
Give that to him so that he goes away. தொலை=to lose/ get lost.
10.  பழங்களை அவளிடமிருந்து வாங்கி வை.
Take the fruit from her and put [them down].
11.  பையன் சாமான்களை எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தான்.
12.  அந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்து விடு.
13.  அந்தப் பன்றியைக் கொன்றுவிடு.
14. குணசீலன் அந்த வீட்டை வாங்கியும் பயனில்லை.
15.  நல்ல மருந்து கொடுத்தும் வியாதியைக் கும்ச்ப்படுத்த முடியவில்லை.
16. குழந்தைக்குச் செல்லம் கொடுத்துக் கொடுத்துக் கொடுத்து விட்டாய்.
17.  குடித்துக் குடித்து அவன் குடல் வெந்து செத்தான்.
18.  கத்திக் கத்தி நா வறண்டு விட்டது.
19.  சிறுவன் பந்தைத் தூக்கி எறிந்தான்.
20.  அவன் தன் தாயை வணங்கிச் சென்றான்.
21.  அவன் எனக்கு ஒரு பொம்மையைச் செய்து தந்தான்.
22.  எலி பொந்தில் மெல்ல நுழைந்து வந்தது.
23.  பறவை வானில் மெல்ல பறந்து வந்தது.
24.  நான் நண்பனை நேற்றுப் பார்த்துப் பேசினேன்.
25.  சிறுவர்கள் ஆற்றில் நீந்தி விளையாடுகிறார்கள்.
26.  அவன் கொட்டிலுக்குச் சென்று சாமி கும்பிட்டு வீடு திரும்பினான்.
27.  நான் காலையில் எழுந்து பல் துலக்கிப் பலகாரம் சாப்பிட்டு பஸ்ஸில் ஏறிப் பல்கலைக் கழகம் சென்றேன்.
28.  மாணவன் பாடத்தை நன்றாகக் கற்றுச் சென்றான்.
29.  மாதவன் மரத்தில் ஏறி கால் வழுக்கிக் கீழே விழுந்தான்.
30.  அவள் பாட்டை நன்றாகப் பாடிச் சென்றாள்.
31.  பழங்களை பறித்துக் கொடு.
32.  அவன் சர்க்கரையை அளந்து கட்டிக் கொடுத்தான்.
