Book Review: Journey Through Islamic Arts

This is a spectacularly beautiful book. The storyline follows a girl who travels through the history of Islamic art through her dream. The illustrations by Diana Mayo are stunning.  The story is simple, but elegant.


The English is in prose, but it is very lyrical and poetic in style. At this point in my Tamil,  I really can't comment on how lyrical or elegant the Tamil translation is.


The fact that this is a bilingual edition, with Tamil and English side-by-side, makes it easy to quickly verify the meaning of new vocabulary.  The book is rated by the publisher for ages 6+ and really should appeal to people of all ages.  The only problem with the book is that the illustrations are so good, that I often find myself not reading at all, but just admiring the artwork in front of me!

This is the first reading selection from the Tamil Nadu textbook Standard 4 Tamil Reader. It occurs on pages 1-2, with worksheets on 2-4.  (It is pages 11-14 in the pdf.)

    (13) நேரம் ஆக ஆக நரிக்கு அச்சம் தோன்றியது.

    (18) "நான் இப்போது சொர்க்கத்தில் இருக்கிறேன். (19) என்ன அருமையான இடம் தெரியுமா? (20) இங்கு மீன், கோழி, ஆடு எல்லாம் தருகிறார்கள்." என்றுது நரி.
    (21) ஓநாய் சற்றும் யோசிக்காமல் கயிற்றின் மறுமுனையில் கட்டப் பட்டிருந்த வாளிக்குள் குதித்தது.  (22) அந்த வாளி 'சரசர'வென்று கிணற்றின் உள்ளே போயிற்று.  (23) அப்போது நரி அமர்ந்திருந்த வாளி மேலே வந்தது.
    (24) நரி மேலே வரும்போது பாதி வழியில் ஓநாயை பார்த்தது.

Tamil Clitics

We see these used frequently in Tamil Newspapers. Clitics are not quite words, but carry meaning which is tied to the word which they follow.

Clitics can be used with a subject which is in the accusative or dative case. They can also be used with personal pronouns.

• மட்டும் "only"

Tamil Reading: உரிமை
உரிமை / "Rights" is the seventh story in the Duke collection.

• மழை பெய்கிறது. தவளை மகிச்சியோடு உரக்க குரல் எழுப்புகிறது.
  It rains. A frog is happy and raises its voice out loud.
• குளத்தில் ஓர் அமை தவளையை பார்த்து சொன்னது:
  In the pond a turtle looked to the frog and said:
• "இப்படி கத்துகிறீர்களே. உங்கள் குரலை கேட்டு பாம்பு உங்களை பிடித்துவிட்டால் உங்கள் நிலை என்ன ஆகும்?"
  You scream like this. Your voice will be heard by a snake, because of this you will be caught, what will happen to your state/condition?
• தவளை சிரித்தது.
  The frog laughed.
• "நான் கொஞ்சமும் கவலைப்பட மாட்டேன்." என்று கூறியது தவளை.
  "I will not be even a little worried." said the frog.
• ஒன்னொரு தவளை சொன்னது:
  Another frog said:
• "முச்சை இழக்கலாம்.

Azhagi and a list of more Tamil resources

It makes me happy when one of my first and favorite Tamil language resources links back to me!  Azhagi, which is a transliteration and writing software for Tamil has a page of resources and I got a mention. Hooray!

In all seriousness, although the Google transliteration is fast and easy since it is built in to so many Google products, it will sometimes auto-correct a word and then use what is actually an incorrect spelling. I have never had that problem with Azhagi.  Azhagi also has more functions than the Google transliterate function; namely that it has a reverse transliterate, which can put Tamil characters into Roman characters. It also allows you to save your work as an rtf file and print it.

உலகத்தின் கடற்கரையின் மொத்த நீளம் ஏறக்குறைய 5 லட்சத்து 4 ஆயிரம் கி.மீ., இது உலகத்தை 12 கடவை சுற்றி வரும் தூரத்திற்கு சமம். முதன்மையான கரைகள் என்பது நிலத்தில் ஏற்படும் மாறுதல்களால்.

உதாரணத்திற்கு சொல்வதென்றால் நதியின் கழிமுகம்.  பல  கடற்கரைகள் பல ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளில் மாறி வரும் கடல் மட்டத்தால் உருவானதாகும்.  அடுத்தபடியாக சமுத்திரத்தில் ஏற்படும் மாற்றங்களால் உருவானதாகும்.  உதாரணத்திற்கு சமுத்திரத்தின் மட்டத்திற்கு அருகே உள்ள சிதைவுப்

கடற்கரைகள் ஒரே மாதிரி இருப்பதில்லை. தொடர்ச்சியாக தண்ணீரால் கூழாங்கற்கள், பாறைகள் காரையில் வந்து சேர கடற்கரையில் மாறுதல் ஏற்படுகிறது.   கடல் தண்ணீரில் காணப்படும் அமிலத் தன்மையாலும் கடற்கரையில் அரிப்பு ஏற்படுகிறது.

• அரிப்பு = separating, shifting
• மாதிரி = sample, manner
• கூழாங்கல் = பெப்ப்ளே

கடற்குகைகள் 

செங்குத்தான பாறைகளுக்கு இடையே ஏற்படும் வழியே கடற்குகை எனப்படும் வலுவில்லாத. விரி சில்கள் உள்ள பாறைகள் அலைகளுக்கு முன் தாக்கு பிடிக்க முடியாமல் உடைந்துவிடும்.  அமெரிக்க கலிபோர்னியாவில் உள்ள சாண்ட குரூஸ் தீவில் உள்ள  க்டற்குகையே உலகிலேயே நீளமான குகையாகும்.

தண்ணீரால் உண்டான துளை
கத்தார் குகை மற்றும் அதன் மேல் உள்ள நிலத்தில் ஏற்படும் அரிப்பால் அங்கே தண்ணீரால் உண்டான தூளை தோன்றுகிறது. சில சமயம் காற்றழுத்தத்தின் வேகம் தண்ணீரை பெரும் வேகத்தொது தூளை மழயே வீசி அடிக்க செய்கிறது.

பாறை தூண்கள்
பாறைகள் நிறைந்த பகுதியில் கடல் அலையானது சில சமயம் கத்தார் குகையின் பின்புறமிருந்து வீசி குகையை வளைவினை போல் மாற்றிவிடும். காலப்போக்கில் வளைவு இடிபட்டு பக்கவாட்டு தூண் போன்ற அமைப்பு மட்டும் கடலில் 'அம்போ' என தனியாய் நிறுத்தப்படும்.

கடல் அரிப்பு!
அலைகள், சூழான்கர்கள் மற்றும் மணல் போன்ற பொருட்களை கரையோரம் கொண்டு சேர்க்கும். அலையில் பயணத்தில் கோணம் ஏற்படும் வகையில் அலை வழக்கமான திசையை சற்று மாற்றி அடித்தால் மேலே சொன்ன பொருட்கள் பக்கவாட்டில் தள்ளப்படும். சில சமயம் இதுபோல பொருட்கள் பக்கவாட்டில் தள்ளப்பட்டு  காற்று மற்றும் நீரோட்டத்தால் இடிபட்டு செல்லாதிருக்க மரத்தாலான கடல் அரிப்பை தடுக்கும் அமைப்புகள் அற்படுத்தப்படும்.

அலைகள்
காற்றால் ஏற்படும் பொது அலைகள்.  அலையின் உயரம், நீளம், வேகம் ஆகியன காற்று எவ்வளவு வேகமாக, எவ்வளவு தூரத்திற்கு வீசுகிறது என்பதை பொறுத்து அமைகிறது.

சுனாமி
சுனாமி என்றல் துறைமுக அலை என்று ஜப்பானிய மொழிய கூறப்படும். இது அலை சார்ந்த அலை அல்ல. இது தண்ணீருக்கு அடியில் ஏற்படும் நிலநடுக்கத்தாலோ, வெளி கிளம்பும் எரிமலையிநாளோ ஏற்படும். சிற்றலைகளின் எண்ணற்ற தொகுப்பு ஒன்றாய் மணிக்கு 700 கி.மீ. வேகத்திற்கு நீர் சொவராய் உருமாறி 30   அடி உயரத்தில் நிலத்தை அடைந்து அனைத்தையும் நீர்மூலமாக்கும்.

Tamil Perfect Tense

The Perfect Tense signifies that an action is completed.

The present perfect means that in the present time, the action has finished. In the past, it had finished, and in the future in English, it will have been finished by a certain time. In Tamil, the future perfect fits the translation "would have" instead.  

In English, we form the Perfect by using the verb "have" conjugated in past, present or future, followed by the past participle (the "ed" form of the verb).

In Tamil, we form the Perfect by using the Adverb Participle (the Converbial) and the class 7 verb இரு (be).

The Adverb Participle covered here, is formed by taking the verb with its past stem and adding உ except for class 3 verbs which add இ. 

• Past Perfect:  I had bought it.  நான் அதை வாங்கியிருந்தேன்.
• Present Perfect:  I have bought it.  நான் அதை வாங்கியிக்கிறேன்.
• Future Perfect: I would have bought it.  நான் அதை வாங்கியிருப்பேன்.

The Perfect tense in Tamil can also have the meaning "be in the condition of" such as the phrase, "The door is closed" கதவு மூடியிருக்கிறது.

Tamil Reading: Tamil Nadu Dinosaur Eggs

Newspaper article from the BBC.

Luckily the BBC English and BBC Tamil articles are very similar in content which helped me figure out a few parts. The article dates to October 2009.  
When we look at more complicated sentences, the less there is going to be a perfect match in translations.  Here I have tried to maintain the kinds of word choice in the Tamil while still rephrasing so that it flows in English. 

தமிழ்நாட்டில் டைனோசோர் முட்டை

1. தமிழ்நாட்டில் அரியலூர் அருகே உள்ள கிராமத்தில் கல்லாகிய நூற்றுக்கணக்கான டைனோசோர் முட்டைகள் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

Tamil Reading: After Many Years

This Reading is Lesson 6 from the Intermediate Coursebook pdf provided by the University of Michigan's Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition

Many people live in peace/protection.  (something seems wrong with this sentence)

Lifco Dictionaries

Lifco (Little Flower Company) is a publisher in India.

I already owned the Lifco Tamil-Tamil-English Dictionary (the yellow one), having purchased it used on Amazon. I recently ordered the Lifco Tamil-Tamil-English Great Dictionary, directly from their company web page Lifco Books.

If you are not ready to order a book from India just yet, they have an online abridged version of the Tamil-Tamil-English Great Dictionary.

To order books from Lifco within the United States, you will put your items in the shopping cart, but instead of entering your buying information, you will wait a bit and get an emailed quote for your order in US dollars which includes shipping. They have to figure out international shipping to your location. When you accept the price, you then mail your payment to the Lifco rep in the US. When that payment clears, Lifco ships your book from Chennai.  I was very happy with the whole transaction. To my location, the total was $19.

The main difference between the regular T-T-E Dictionary and the Great Dictionary is the printing inside.  The quality of paper and printing is much higher in the Great Dictionary.  I can't tell if the Great Dictionary uses a slightly larger font size, or if the readability is due more to the white space around the entries. The Great Dictionary has more margin space enhancing its appeal.  The Great Dictionary also has more pages and entries than the regular one.  Both have appendixes of lists in the back of the book.

Both are very nice dictionaries and I would recommend either to a student of the Tamil Language. However, considering that your shipping costs to the US are going to be the majority of the cost, you should get the Tamil-Tamil-English Great Dictionary due to its superior readability.

Tamil Reading: Kung Fu Nuns in Nepal

The BBC just ran an article in English and one in Tamil about nuns in Nepal learning the art of Kung Fu.

குங் ஃபூ பயிலும் பிக்குணிகள்

நேபாளத்தின் பௌத்த மடம் ஒன்றில் பிக்குணிகளுக்கு குங் ஃபூ தற்காப்புக் கலையில் பயிற்சி தரப்படுகிறது.

• குங் ஃபூ Kung Fu
• பயில் : practice; habit; signal; trained and attain skill  
• பிக்குணி : பெளத்த பிட்சுணி Buddhist female ascetic 
• பௌத்தம் Buddhism (புத்தர்= Buddha)

• தரப்படுகிறது is given 

குழந்தைகளை பெற்று வளர்ப்பது, வயல்களில் வேலை செய்வது, பொதுவாக கல்வி பெறுவதிலிருந்து ஒதுக்கி வைக்கப்படுவது என்று பாரம்பரியமாகவே ஒரு கஷ்டமான வாழ்க்கையைத்தான் கடுமையான குளிர் நிலவும் இமாலய மலைப் பகுதிகளில் பெண்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்துள்ளனர்.

ஏனென்றால் ஆண் பிக்குகளுக்கு பணிவிடை செய்யும் பணிப் பெண்களாகவே பிக்குணிகள் பொதுவாகக் கருதப்படுகிறார்கள்.

ஆனால் இதை ஒரு புத்த மதப் பிரிவு மாற்ற முயன்று கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

துருக்பா மடாலயம்

800 ஆண்டுகளாக இருந்து வரும் இந்த துருக்பா பிரிவைச் சேர்ந்த இந்த மடாலயத்தில் கடந்த நான்கு ஆண்டுகளாக பிக்குணிகளுக்கு குங் ஃபூ பயிற்சி வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

"குங் ஃபூ பயில்வது எனக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி தருகிறது. உடலும் நல்ல ஆரோக்கியத்துடன் இருக்கிறது. இந்த பயிற்சி எமது தியானப் பயிற்சிக்கும் உதவுகிறது" என கொஞ்சுக் என்ற 17 வயது பெண் துறவி தெரிவித்தார்.

வியட்நாமிய குங் ஃபூ பயிற்சியாளர் இளம் பெண் பிக்குணிகளுக்கு பயிற்சி தருகிறார்.

பௌத்த மடாலயம் நடத்தும் ஆங்கிலப் பெண்

30 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் முன்னர் துருக்பா புத்தமதப் பிரிவில் சேர்ந்து ஒரு பிக்குணியான ஜெட் சும்னர் என்ற ஆங்கிலப் பெண்மணி, இப்போது இமாலயப் பகுதியில் அவரே ஒரு பிக்குணிகள் மடாலயத்தை நடத்துகிறார்.

இந்த மடாலயம் ஒரு நவீனமயமானதாக, நன்றாக வசதிகள் படைத்ததாக அழகாக இருக்கிறது என்பது முதல் விஷயம்.

வழக்கத்துக்கு மாறாக, இந்த பிக்குணிகள் இங்கு பொளத்த பிக்குகள் செய்யும் எல்லா சடங்குகளையும் செய்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் எல்லோரும் குங் ஃபூவும் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டியதாயிருக்கிறது.

இரண்டாவது வருடாந்திர துருக்பா மாநாட்டுக்காக அங்கு வந்த நூற்றுக்கணக்கான யாத்ரீகர்கள் முன்பு பிக்குணிகள் தமது குங் ஃபூ திறமையை வெளிப்படுத்தினர்.

Tamil Reading: A Thought and an Event

நினைப்பும் நடப்பும் "A Thought and an Event"

"A Thought and an Event" is the sixth story in the Duke collection.

1.  காலையில் ஞாயிறு உதித்தது.
In the morning the sun rose.
2.  குளத்தில் தாமரை பூ மலர்ந்தது.
In the pond, the lotus flower bloomed.
3.  ஒரு தேனீ அங்கே வந்த தாமரை பூவில் உர்கார்ந்தது/இருந்தது.
A honeybee came and sat in the lotus flower.
4.  பூவிளிருன்தது தேனை குடித்தது.
It was in the flower drinking honey.
5.  ஆனால் அதனுடைய ஆசை குறையவில்லை.
But it's desire did not subside.
6.  அது பகல் முழுவதும் தேனை குடித்தது.
It drank honey the entire day.
7.  மாலை நேரத்தில் தாமரை பூ கூம்பினது.
In the evening, the lotus flower closed.
8.  தேனீ தாமரை பூவுக்குள் இருந்தது.
The honey bee was inside the lotus flower.
9.  தேனீயால் வெளியே வர முடிவில்லை.
As a result the honey bee could not come outside.
10.  ஆனால் அது கவலைப்படவில்லை.
