Tamil Pronouns in the Noun Cases

Tamil nouns take on noun case endings instead of having prepositions like we do in English. Some of the noun cases are different for the pronouns than for regular nouns.  In this spreadsheet, I have posted a chart based on Balasubramaniam's Tamil: A Foundation Course (1995, p88). There are two columns for the genitive case, just as there are in the original. I am not sure what the reason for that is, but am trying to present the information in tact.

Keep in mind that these are pure Tamil forms and are not always used in spoken Tamil. When I have more complete information on the spoken forms, I will create another spreadsheet for comparison.

    Defective Verbs: Know and Understand

Know and Understand can take past, present and future forms in Tamil.
Both verbs also use the subject in the dative case. So instead of "I know", it translates a little more like, "it is known to me."

    Past: Knew: தெரிந்தது
    Present: Know: தெரிகிறது
    Future: Will know: தெரியும்
    Pres/Past Negative: Did not/do not know: தெரியவில்லை
Future Negative: Will not know: தெரியாது

    Past: Understood:  புரிந்தது
    Present: Understand: புரிகிறது
    Future: Will Understand: புரியும்
    Pres/Past Negative: Did not/do not understand: புரியவில்லை
Future Negative: Will not understand:  புரியாது

Remember that habitual actions take the future tense (even though they take present tense in English) so you may end up using the future forms of these verbs more often, because it does not just mean "I will know" or "I will understand" but also to inform of a general understanding as well.

    Tamil Defective/Impersonal Verbs
In the Tamil language, there are certain verbs which do not follow the normal conjugations rules. They are called "Defective" or "Impersonal" verbs.  Each verb has its own rules, but the one common theme is that the subject of the sentence is not in the nominative case (for example, instead of saying நான் "I", you might say எனக்கு "to me").

    Children's Song: White Rabbit #2

    Children's Song: வெள்ளை முயல்
Unlike the first version I found, this one provides the lyrics at the bottom!

    வெள்ளை முயல் ஓடுது
    வேகமாக ஒத்து,
    குள்ளி முயல் ஓடுது
    குதித்துக் குதித்து ஓடுது;
    நெட்டையான காதையே
    நீட்டி நீட்டி ஆட்டுது,
    குட்டையான வாலையே
    குறுகுறுன்று ஆட்டுது!

    Vocabulary:
    • வெள்ளை = (adj) white
    • முயல் = (n) rabbit
    • ஓடு = (v) run
    • வேகம் = (n) velocity, swiftness
    • குதி = (v) leap, jump, spring, skip
    • நெட்டை = (n) tallness, long-ness
    • காது = (n) ear
    • நீட்டி = be prolonged, be long, delay, extended
    • ஆட்டு = shake, dance
    • குட்டை = short
    •  வால் = tail
    Grammar
Here we can see examples of how adjectives and adverbs are formed.
Take the noun வேகம் (velocity). We add ஆக to turn it into the adverb: வேகமாக (quickly).
The noun நெட்டை (tallness), changes to நெட்டையான to make "tall."
The noun குட்டை (shortness), changes to குட்டையான to make "short."

So, I changed the template today, but I am battling it because it is not set for the jump breaks to work properly.  On Google's Blogger help page it says I will need to change the html, and I did that, and it is still not showing jump breaks properly...

This post is mostly for testing to see when I get the html working properly.
There should be a link here that says read more/continue reading...
