Tamil Future Tense Negative

Tamil Future Tense Negative is somewhat similar to the Tamil Present/Past Negative form in that we start with the infinitive for both. For the Future Tense negative, we do conjugate for the pronoun endings (which we don't have to do for present/past negative).

Tamil Future Tense Negative is formed by:  Infinitive + மாட்ட் + pronoun ending
Except: It/அது which forms future tense negative by Infinitive + அது

Exercises from Lesson 24: Future Tense Negative from "Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf.
Exercises cover Future Tense Negative as well as reviewing a number of other forms like the accusative and dative noun cases. Notes in parentheses discuss more modern common forms and spoken pronunciations.
a. Did he sell this farm for her? அவன் அவளுக்கு இந்த கோட்டத்தை விற்றானா? (the noun தோட்டம் used in the accusative case is technically correct, but more people would use இடம், place, room, ground, land, instead)
He did not sell it. அவன் இதனை விற்கவில்லை. (இதனை is pure Tamil, people will use இதை when speaking instead).
Will he sell it next year? அவன் அடுத்த ஆண்டு அதனை விற்பானா? (Spoken: avan aduththa varusham  virkaathaa?)
No, he will not sell the farm. இல்லை, அவன் தோட்டத்தை விற்கமாட்டன்.

b. This camel drinks water now. இந்த ஒட்டகம் இப்பொழுது தண்ணீர் குடிகிறது. (Spoken: Intha ottagam ippo thanee kudikidhu.)
It will not drink tomorrow. இது நாளை குடிக்கது. (Can omit இது)
c. I will not spill the milk. நான் பாலை சிந்தமாட்டேன்.
d. They bought murukku for me. அவர்கள் எனக்கு முறுக்கை வாங்கினார்கள்.
e. Will you cut the vegetables for mother? நீ அம்மாவுக்கு காய்கறியை நறுக்குவாயா?
f. We will not read the book. நங்கள் நூலை படிக்கமாட்டோம்.
g. You all will not sleep here again. நீங்கள் இங்கே மறுபடியும் தூங்கமாட்டீர்கள்.
h. She washes clothes for me. அவள் எனக்கு துணியை துவைக்கிறாள்.

Past and Present Tense Negative

Tamil Past and Present Tense do not form the negative the same way that English does. In English, for past we add "did not _____" and for present "do not_________." In Tamil we take the infinitive of the verb and add --வில்லை. We add --வில்லை for both past and present negative and there is no difference in conjugation based on pronoun. So, "I did not" is the same as "she did not" and "he does not" etc.

The exercises are from Lesson 23: Past and Present Tense Negative from "Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf.
1. Translate from Tamil into English
a. அவர்கள் நின்றார்களா? இல்லை, அவர்கள் உட்கார்ந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் உட்காரவில்லை. Did they stand? No, they sat. They didn't sit. (makes no sense as a sequence, but that is how it translates)
b. பாப்பா சிரிக்கிராலா? இல்லை, அவள் அழுகிறாள். Does the baby laugh? No, she cries.
c. நேற்று விட்டுக்குப் போனார்களா? இல்லை இங்கே இருந்தார்கள். இன்று புறப்படுவார்களா? Yesterday did they go to the house? No, they were here. Today will they fly?
d. குழுந்தை தூங்குகிறதா? இல்லை, குழுந்தை விளையாடுகிறது. Does the child sleep? No, the child plays.

2. Translate from English into Tamil.
a. Does he chase the birds? அவன் புறவையை துரத்துகிரானா?
No, he watches the birds. இல்லை, அவன் புறவையை காண்கிறான். (Not sure on the conjugation of this class 5 verb)
b. She does not watch the game.அவள் விளையாட்டை பார்க்கவில்லை.
c. Did you swallow a pill? நீ மாத்திரையை விழுங்குனாயா?
No, you did not swallow a pill. நீ மாத்திரையை விழுங்கவில்லை.

h. Did she kill a scorpion? அவள் தேளை கொன்றாளா?
i. We study chemistry. நங்கள் அறிவியலை படிக்கிறோம்.

Indirect Object (ukku)

Tamil Indirect Object

What is the indirect object? The direct object is what actually receives the action. In the sentence, "I hit the ball." the ball is the direct object. If, "I hit the ball to you," "you" are not receiving the action (being hit), but are the indirect recipient because you get the ball. It answers to whom or to what, it can also be used to indicate movement toward a place.
Post is based on Lessons 20-22 from "Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf.
Formation of the Indirect Object/Dative Case

  • For nouns ending in டு/று not preceded by a dotted consonant, double the consonant before adding க்கு. (ட்டுக்கு/ற்றுக்கு)
  • For nouns ending in ம் change ம் to த்த் before adding உக்கு.
  • For nouns ending in ர் or ய் add க்கு.
  • For nouns made of one short syllable (vowels அ,இ,உ,எ,ஒ) double the last consonant before adding  உக்கு. If the word has 1 short syllable and ends in ய், follow the ய் rule above.
The below exercises come from Lessons 20-22 from the Duke pdf.
