"Coconut and Grass" is the third story in the Duke collection.
Here I have retyped the story:
Line by line translation here:
தென்னையும் புல்லும்
Coconut and grass
ஒரு பையன் ஒரு தென்னை மரத்தை பார்த்தான்.
A boy saw a coconut tree.
இளனீர் குடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று அவனுக்கு ஆசை வந்தது.
I want to drink the fresh coconut juice, a desire came to him.
தென்னை மரத்தில் ஏறினான்.
He climbed the coconut tree.
பாதி ஏறி கீழே பார்த்தான்.
Half way climbed, he looked down.
தோட்டக்காரன் அப்போது அங்கே வந்தான்.
A farmer then came there.
பையன் அவனை பார்த்து கீழே இறங்கினான்.
The boy saw him and climbed down.
"என் தென்னை மரத்தில் ஏன் ஏறினாய்?"
Why did you climb my coconut tree?
என்று பையனை மிரட்டினான் தோட்டக்காரன்.
Threatened the farmer to the boy.
"'மாட்டுக்கு புல் கொண்டுவா' என்று அப்பா சொன்னார். புல் பறிக்க தான் ஏறினேன்." என்று பையன் சொன்னான். Bring some grass for the cow, my father said. I climbed to pull grass. Said the boy.
"தென்னை மரத்தில் புல் இருக்கிறதா?"
Was there grass in the tree?
"இல்லை, அண்ணா, மரத்தில் புல் கிடையாது.
No, sir(?), there isn't any grass in the tree.
அதனால் தான் இறங்கி வந்தேன்."
For that reason I came climbing down.
என்று சொல்லி பையன் வெளியே ஓடி போனான்.
Said the boy running as he went outside (away?).

Lesson Planning

comments
I have 10 more of the Duke lessons left, which I would like to finish in about a month. The total set of 25 is supposed to equal about 1 semester's worth of study.
The general per week goals are:
2-4 Lessons completed for Grammar
1 movie or several dialogs from the Asher book for Listening Skills
1-2 readings
The third week of February I have some additional work deadlines, so I may be modifying Tamil learning goals for that week down to some review of previous lessons as opposed to doing anything new.

Lesson 14 "Learn Thamil Through English" on the Duke University page. Direct download link to the lessons pdf. Lesson 14 covers how to create the future tense of அது "it."
அது does not follow the normal conjugation rules of root + etc., etc. Instead, we take the infinitive, and add உம்.
Exercise 1 provides new verbs and their classes and asks us to convert them into both the infinitive and the future tense for அது.
a. (class 6) உதை --> உதைக்க --> அது உதிக்கும்
b. (class 1) செல் --> செல்ல --> அது செல்லும்
c. (class 7) இரு --> இருக்க --> அது இருக்கும் (be)
d. (class 4) பெறு --> பெற --> அது பெறும்
e. (class 3) விரும்பு --> விரும்ப --> அது விரும்பும்.
f. (class 7) இற --> இறக்க --> அது இறக்கும்.
Exercise 2: Translate into Tamil.
a. The bird will build a nest. பறவை கூடை கட்டும்.
b. This goat will bite you. இந்த ஆடு உன்னை கடிக்கும்.
c. The flower will bloom. பூ பூக்கும்.
d. It will be inside. அது உள்ளே இருக்கும்.
e. The calf will be born. கன்று பிறக்கும்.

Another Tamil Textbook (Intermediate level)

I have lofty goals to be finished with the beginner's Lessons 1-25 on the Duke page by the end of February, which means I will be looking into using books at an Intermediate level.
This page from the University of Michigan (which also happens to publish a number of Tamil resources) has an Intermediate level textbook; it essentially looks like a reader.
It has stories written in both the spoken and written variations of the language. The website also has mp3 files which correspond to each chapter!

How to learn the Tamil Alphabet
2
comments
Learning a new orthography can be intimidating, but it is not really that difficult if you know how to start.
A little background:
Tamil is technically an abugida, which means that the letters are based on syllables, they contain (usually) both a vowel and a consonant and each change of consonant follows a predictable pattern. Looking at a Tamil க(ka) and கி(ki) you see a hook added to make the "i."
Online Sources for Learning the Tamil Alphabet
Start with an alphabet chart, and a couple of words you are learning. Start with maybe 5-10 words. You might start with the Alphabet learning workbook from Tamil Virtual University. You can also jump straight into the Duke University web lessons, and slowly match up the letters in an alphabet chart. Basically you want to pick a few words, and practice the letters in those words. Practice the letters separately, copying them out, for example:
அ அ அ அ அ அ அ
ம் ம் ம் ம் ம் ம் ம்
and also within words. அம்மா (mother), ஆமாம் (yes) , மாமா (uncle)
You can use any vocabulary list to start learning the alphabet. I don't recommend making flashcards for all 247 letters. I think it is a better usage of your time to focus on words that are currently in lessons you are working on, and then you will find yourself recognizing and knowing letters that you may not have explicitly practiced.
It is also useful to use Azhagi, NHM or the google transliteration for copying Tamil texts. You can immediately see if you are associating the correct sounds with the letter. Find texts in Tamil, and copy them again into your word processor/email or blog.
